Evil Dead The Game review

Evil Dead The Game is a game I have been keen to try for a little while, after falling in love with Sam Raimi’s direction of the movie trilogy and the development of Ash Williams’ character from mild-mannered college kid to heroic demon-slaying badass.

Evil Dead The Game really is a treat for fans of the Evil Dead franchise – as well as being a treat for general fans of the horror genre or asymmetrical multiplayer games. It ticks all the boxes you’d expect from a game like this, and then ticks a few more that you didn’t know existed. It’s clear that this was a game made by fans, for fans, as much as it was made for a wider audience. It’s one of the few asymmetrical multiplayer games that has full single-player support too, in the form of a short Evil Dead The Game Missions list and AI-controlled Survivors and Demons.
But, of course, having AI companions is only part and parcel of what makes this a fantastic offering from Saber Interactive. I had the chance to review Evil Dead The Game on PS5 and, although I do have some concerns about certain aspects of the game, I am finding this to be a wholly enjoyable experience that I can see being a firm favourite for some time.

Still, it’s good to see everybody back, from all three Evil Dead movies and the tv series alike, and we’ve gone through their respective roles and abilities in our guide below. Read on to find the full character and demon list for Evil Dead: The Game.

‘Evil Dead: The Game’ Developers Detail the Storyline That Brings All Characters into One World

Coming next month from Saber Interactive, Evil Dead: The Game is primarily a multiplayer experience, pitting four survivors from the franchise up against the forces of evil. Of course, you’ll be able to play solo with computer bots if you prefer, and you’ll also be given the option to play single-player side missions that will expand upon the lore of the Evil Dead world.

Speaking with Slasher Radio this week, Saber developers Tim Willits and Craig Sherman explained how the single-player missions will work, and what they’ll allow you to unlock.

They explain, “You can play the game by yourself in two different ways. The first is the main core game loop, which is four survivors versus the demon. You can play that by yourself. You can jump in as a survivor, the computer takes care of your buddies, and then play against the computer as the demon. If you want to just experience more of the world, we have these side missions.

We only have a handful. It’s not a single-player campaign, it’s not like that. But it is single-player missions that allow you to dive deeper into the lore.”

Evil Dead: The Game Tips For Survivors And Kandarian Demons

Manage your fear

Evil Dead: The Game utilizes several horror-based mechanics/systems that need to be managed during play. This main one, when playing as a survivor, is the fear gauge. Located on the bottom left of the screen (right under your life bar) is a meter that slowly fills up over the course of a match. Certain stimuli and/or compromising situations–getting attacked by deadites, tripping a scare trap, being alone or in darkness–contributes to your rising fear.

Be sneaky

When we say sneaky, we don’t mean crawling through tall grass ghillie-style. We mean don’t do things that’ll bring unwanted attention to yourself. Using a gun to take down enemies early on isn’t wise for instance. Every time you do, you risk the chance of alerting the demon player. It’s best to stick with melee weapons at the start of a match.

Use the map

Evil Dead: The Game has a handy ping system. You can ping unwanted weapons, health-based items, and more while running about. That said, the ping system is best used in conjunction with the game’s map. Because the play area is huge, it’s best to mark a desired location before running off.

Stay together

Working as a team is key. To do that properly, you’ll need to stay with your teammates. Splitting up in hopes of finding the pages of the Necronomicon sooner than later will only lead to a rising fear gauge and possibly death.

Dodge attacks

Make sure to dodge attacks. Too many players go into a fight, chainsaw swinging, expecting to win. While it does work most of the time against low level enemies, you’ll eventually take some damage during the scuffle. That damage adds up over time.

Use Finishers

One of the best things you can do during a scuffle is perform a finisher. These moves, prompted when an enemy is knocked off-balance after receiving a series of melee attacks, allow you to either deal a ton of damage or outright kill a foe. That isn’t the only reason you’ll want to use these moves though. For one, enemies killed by a finisher are more likely to drop an item. Need more ammo or some extra health? Try a finisher.

Adjust your settings

If you’re playing Evil Dead: The Game on PC, it might be wise to temper your settings based on playing as the demons. While in third-person as a survivor, everything was fine on maxed out settings. That wasn’t the case when we transitioned to first person as a demon; we experienced frame issues/lag during some matches.

Evil Dead game on Steam

Ash and the forces of evil await you, but only on one PC platform!

If you’ve tried to find the newly released Evil Dead: The Game on Steam, you will have noticed that it doesn’t seem to exist on that particular PC launcher/storefront.

Hardened Steam users know that this is becoming increasingly common – more and more PC launchers are popping up all the time, and game developers/publishers often make exclusivity deals with these rival platforms.

To be honest, we’d be amazed if you’re managing to be a computer-based gamer in this day and age without having two or three or even four different launchers installed on your machine.

When is ‘Evil Dead: The Game’ coming to the Nintendo Switch?

While Evil Dead: The Game is available on a large variety of platforms at launch, the only video game platform you won’t find it on right away is the Nintendo Switch.
developer Saber Interactive has confirmed that the game will be making its way to the platform in the future. At this moment though, Evil Dead: The Game does not have a release date for the Switch.

Does ‘Evil Dead: The Game’ have crossplay support?

Since the game has been released on so many platforms and requires an internet connection to make, it would only make sense that the game has full crossplay support at launch.

Thankfully, you can play Evil Dead: The Game with any of your friends regardless of what platform they’re playing on. Whether you’re playing across consoles or even PC to console, you and your friends will be able to hop online together seamlessly.

Can Evil Dead: The Game be played offline?

Is there Evil Dead offline mode? No, online access is required to play Evil Dead: The Game.

is Evil Dead: The Game have single-player?

Yes, Evil Dead: The Game does have a single-player mode of sorts, so there is stuff to do if you’re not a multiplayer fan. This isn’t exactly a full sprawling campaign, so don’t go expecting an epic story set in the Evil Dead world.

is Evil Dead: The Game be crossplay?

It’s been confirmed that Evil Dead: The Game has crossplay and lets you team up against the Deadites regardless of platform. Specifically, you’ll find Evil Dead on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. It’ll also be available on Switch, but not at launch and with no announced release date.

Can you play Evil Dead: The Game with bots?

The Evil Dead single player isn’t going to be a traditional single player experience though. The game will allow you to use bots to populate as your teammates so even if you don’t have anyone to play with you can play with bots. It’s also been stated that there will be single player portions of the game as well.

Who owns the Evil Dead franchise?

Evil Dead is an American horror film franchise created by Sam Raimi consisting of four feature films and a television series.
