Apex Legends has been designed explicitly for mobile, with streamlined controls and thoughtful optimizations that result in one of the most advanced battle royale combat games available for a tablet or phone.

Apex Legends Mobile launches on May 17th

Several years after we first heard that EA and Respawn Entertainment would bring their battle royale shooter to mobile platforms, there’s a global release date for Apex Legends Mobile, which will launch for Android and iOS on May 17th. Beta testing for the game started over a year ago and has slowly expanded to include more players worldwide, but now its limited regional launch period is over. If you’re wondering what devices it will run on, this FAQ from the beta has more information.

EA isn’t ready to share more details, but beta testers have been able to experience a game that looks fairly close to the experience players get on PCs and consoles. In an earlier trailer provided for the regional launch, you can see how the game has changed for play on mobile platforms and some idea of the touch-optimized controls that are available.

The assorted legends, three-player squad action, and maps players will recognize are making the transition to mobile — and of course, it’s still free to play. While the main game just launched season 13 on Tuesday with a new hero, Newcastle, and other changes, the launch trailer for Apex Legends Mobile reveals it’s starting its own run with season 1. The mobile version will also have some of its own features, including specific modes and social tie-ins.

Live service games like Apex Legends are now a huge part of EA’s business; in its earnings report this week, the company revealed the category accounts for a massive portion of its revenue, at over $4.998 billion over the last year. A similar report from Activision Blizzard in February said that Call of Duty Mobile accounted for more than $1 billion in revenue for 2021, so you can see why this launch is so important.

Apex Legends Mobile: Season 1 Launch Trailer

The next evolution of mobile Battle Royale is here. Become an Apex Champion anywhere with Apex Legends: Mobile, launching on iOS and Android on May 17!

Nope. As indicated by its name, Apex Legends Mobile is an entirely unique version of the wider format. It’s a completely separate app with its own store, list of playable characters, progression, and modes. Like PUBG Mobile and Call of Duty Mobile before it, the new version is its own experience. That means the game could feature mobile-exclusive maps and even mobile-first characters.

In that vein it should be noted that, while Apex’s creators at Respawn Entertainment have been assisting with the app’s development, it’s also being worked on at LightSpeed & Quantum Studio, the subsidiary of Tencent responsible for the development of PUBG Mobile.

Apex Legends Mobile has been in a limited-region beta (including Oceania, Southeast Asia, and South America) since March 7. In a blog post on March 17, Respawn said the new version would feature “new mobile-first Legends with new stories to tell.”

Players can pre-register to help the Apex Legends Mobile community unlock rewards set to go live during the game’s launch next week for either iOS and Android versions of the game.

Apex Legends Mobile modes

You can play the standard Battle Royale mode, as well as Arenas, Ranked, and even Team Deathmatch in the new version. The Firing Range is also seriously improved in Apex Mobile, with difficulty settings, a free-for-all mode, and even unlimited ammo. Respawn has announced that more mobile-exclusive modes will also come to the game.

Is Apex Legends Mobile free?

Yes, the new version is totally free-to-play, just like the PC and console versions.

But, as expected, there will be paid for cosmetic items, although Respawn reassures players that it will “never include paid items that grant a gameplay advantage.”

Apex Legends Mobile will also feature its own Battle Passes, complete with exclusive collectible cosmetics and unlockable items that are unique from the ones we know and love in the PC and console versions of the game.

Will Apex Legends Mobile feature cross-play?

This is one we already have a solid answer on, and that is no, the new version won’t be cross-compatible with PC or console, so you’re guaranteed to only be playing against other mobile players.

Respawn says: “Apex Legends Mobile is specially designed for touchscreens, with streamlined controls and thoughtful optimizations that result in the most advanced battle royale combat available on a phone.”

Most mobile games are often kept separate from their PC and console counterparts, with the notable exception of Fortnite, and given the different amount of power a phone and a gaming rig/console have, it does make some sense when it comes to a quick-moving game like Apex.

How Many Legends Are In Apex Legends Mobile?

So far, the following legends have been confirmed for Apex Legends Mobile: Bloodhound, Gibraltar, Lifeline, Wraith, Bangalore, Octane, Mirage, Pathfinder, and Caustic. But besides these, they have specifically mentioned that more content and Legends are expected to be in the launch-day version.

Which Map Will Apex Legends Mobile Be Played On?

World’s Edge is the only confirmed map, but more are expected to come either on-launch or shortly thereafter. This will probably be well received, Olympus might be the best map, but World’s End is also a popular choice.

Alternatives To Mobile

If your phone is not able to run Apex Legends, or it can’t run it well, then you can alternatively play on PC with Android emulators like BlueStacks. Of course, we haven’t seen the new terms of service yet, and you should read for yourself at launch to know whether such emulators are allowed. But for most mobile games, using a 3rd party service to access Android is okay.

And that’s about everything we can tell you in regard to Apex Legends Mobile right now. Who are you going to play first? One of the best beginner Legends? Or perhaps someone annoying to wind up your teammates?
