Investigation: How Roblox Is Exploiting Young Game Developers
Roblox is an online game platform and game creation system developed by Roblox Corporation that allows users to program games and play games created by other users. Created by David Baszucki and Erik Cassel in 2004 and released in 2006, the platform hosts user-created games of multiple genres coded in the programming language Lua. For most of the game’s history, it was relatively small, both as a platform and a company. Roblox codes began to grow rapidly in the second half of the 2010s, and this growth has been accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
What age is Roblox for?
Roblox doesn’t specify a minimum age. Users of any age can create and join groups, chat, and interact with others. The company’s commitment to the theory of “constructivism,” which promotes the educational benefits of curiosity, designing, and building, is — in theory — appropriate for anyone who can navigate through a game. In practice, though, such an open approach can pose some risks to kids, especially younger ones.
And though the game has some safety precautions in place, it remains a target of people with less-than-good intentions. Still, because of the learning potential Roblox offers, Common Sense Media rates it OK for users age 13+. We urge parents to help kids protect themselves by enabling privacy settings, teaching them how to recognize the methods that online predators use to win kids’ trust and exploit them, and showing kids how to report bad behavior and block users.
Are there parental controls for Roblox?
The game offers account controls that let parents restrict how kids can interact on the site and the types of games they can play. You can control whether kids can be contacted, who can message or chat with them, and a few other things in the contact settings. To enable these settings, you add your email address to your kid’s account and create a PIN that prevents kids from changing the settings back. The account controls are optional; kids of any age can create an account on Roblox with no parental restrictions. On accounts of kids under 13, the game automatically defaults to stricter settings, but a kid could change these if there’s no parent PIN.
Is Roblox free?
Roblox is 100% free to make an account. From there, you can choose from a number of “Builders Club” options that you can add to your child’s account if you want to.
Builders Club is a monthly subscription that gives your child’s account many different things. The most important one is a monthly allowance of the game. Robux is the in-game currency that your child can use to buy and sell the products they’ve created.
Your child can also use Robux to buy cool items with which to customize their avatar (always a big hit).
Is Roblox safe?
Roblox is extremely safe. It’s a platform built for kids, so the company has very strict language filters on all their chats, as well as a ton of settings parents can adjust to ensure their child’s safety. They also don’t hesitate to ban users who violate their terms and conditions.
Additionally, Roblox is a member of various institutes and programs, like the Family Online Safety Institute and kidSAFE Seal Program, that are dedicated to ensuring the safety of children on the internet.
What are Roblox avatars?
A hugely important thing to know about Roblox is avatars. This is how you appear in the game world. Everyone is automatically given an avatar, a human-like character that, by default, reflects your appearance in all Roblox games. You can earn items and customisations for your avatar, or you can buy them with Robux virtual currency, which must be purchases with your real-life money. So, yes, you’ll need a credit card attached to your account to buy Robux.
Avatars may be customised with a wide range of body parts, accessories, clothing, skin colours, animations, and more. This gives you a myriad of ways to express your individual personality and style on the platform. If you don’t know where to start or need some inspiration, there are several resources available online, including Pinterest.
How to chat in Roblox
There are a few things to know about how messaging works on Roblox.
To send a message to a friend, go to your Friends section and click on your friend’s name. This will take you to their profile. Press the Message button at the top of the page that contains their username and friends and followers information.
If you are not friends with someone you’d like to message, you can still send a message as long as you and they have allowed this in their privacy settings.
Can’t click the Message button?
If the person you are trying to message has a Message button that’s not clickable, then their privacy settings might not be set up to allow private messages.
How to Update ROBLOX
Updating ROBLOX is really simple – regardless of the platform you are playing on. Google Play Store and the iOS App Store usually have auto-updates for Apps and Games on by default. When you try to load ROBLOX before your app has been updated, the game will give you the option to update and send you to your device’s store page.
This is also the same with the Xbox One and Series X/S consoles. There’s a dedicated Game Updates page via Games & Apps, but launching ROBLOX without the required update will push the Xbox to update automatically.
If you’re on a PC or Laptop, launching a game via the browser will load up the ROBLOX player that you downloaded before, and provided you have the required internet connection, the Launcher will automatically update for you.
Is Roblox Content Suitable for All Ages? Available on smartphones, tablets, desktop computers, the Xbox One, and some VR headsets, Roblox has an ESRB rating of E10+ for Everyone 10 and up for Fantasy Violence, which means that typical gameplay should be suitable for most kids.
And though Roblox has some safety precautions in place, it remains a target of people with less-than-good intentions. Still, because of the learning potential Roblox offers, Common Sense Media rates it OK for users age 13+.

Gameplay. In terms of gameplay, Roblox has the edge over Minecraft simply due to the sheer volume of gameplay options.
