The demo, which was announced at the Final Fantasy 16 pre-launch celebration on June 11, offers two distinct sections of gameplay that showcase the game’s story, characters, combat, and graphics. The first section is the game’s opening prologue, which introduces the protagonist Clive Rosfield and his tragic backstory. The second section is a special battle demo, which features an infiltration mission with Clive’s allies Torgal and Cidolfus.

The prologue section lasts about two and a half hours and covers the first few chapters of the game. It follows Clive as he grows up in the kingdom of Rosaria, where he is destined to become its Dominant, a person who can wield the power of an Eikon, a powerful beast that represents an element. Clive’s Eikon is Phoenix, the firebird of legend.

However, Clive’s fate takes a dark turn when his homeland is attacked by the neighboring empire of Niflheim, which unleashes its own Eikon, Ifrit, the fire demon. In the ensuing chaos, Clive loses everything he holds dear and vows revenge against Niflheim and Ifrit.

The prologue section allows players to experience the game’s fast-paced action combat system, which combines real-time attacks, dodges, parries, and abilities. Clive can use his sword skills as well as Phoenix’s fire magic to deal damage to enemies. He can also summon Phoenix in certain situations to unleash devastating attacks or heal himself.

The prologue section also introduces some of the game’s supporting characters, such as Clive’s younger brother Joshua, who is actually the true Dominant of Phoenix; Jill Warrick, Clive’s childhood friend and confidant; and Marshal Cidolfus Telamon, the leader of Rosaria’s army and Clive’s mentor.

The best part about the prologue section is that players can save their progress and transfer it to the full game when it launches next week. This means that they can continue their journey from where they left off without having to replay the same content.

The special battle demo section lasts about two hours and features a different scenario from the main game. It takes place after the prologue section and follows Clive as he infiltrates a fort at night with Torgal and Cidolfus. Torgal is a loyal wolf companion who can assist Clive in combat by biting enemies or fetching items. Cidolfus is a veteran soldier who can use his gunblade to shoot or slash foes.

The special battle demo section gives players a chance to test out more of the game’s combat options by providing them with various unlocked abilities and accessories. Clive can use different types of fire magic, such as fireballs, firewalls, or firestorms. He can also use other abilities that enhance his sword skills or mobility. For example, he can use Focus to slow down time and aim at enemies’ weak points; he can use Dash to quickly close in or evade enemies; or he can use Jump to reach higher places or perform aerial attacks.

The special battle demo section also features several challenging enemies and bosses that require different strategies and tactics to defeat. Some enemies are resistant or weak to certain elements or attacks; some enemies can fly or burrow underground; some enemies can summon reinforcements or heal themselves. The bosses are especially tough and have multiple phases and patterns that players need to learn and adapt to.

Unlike the prologue section, players cannot save their progress in the special battle demo section. However, they can replay it as many times as they want to practice their combat skills or try different approaches.

The demo also showcases the game’s stunning graphics and performance on PS5. The game runs at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second on PS5, delivering smooth and crisp visuals. The game also supports ray tracing, which adds realistic lighting and shadows to the environments. The game also takes advantage of the PS5’s high-speed SSD, which reduces loading times significantly. Moreover, the game utilizes the PS5’s DualSense controller features, such as haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, to enhance the immersion and feedback of the combat.

The demo is a great way for fans to get a taste of Valisthea, the vibrant and diverse world of Final Fantasy 16. Valisthea is a land where six nations coexist in an uneasy balance, each with its own culture, history, and Eikon. The game’s story will explore the conflicts and mysteries that arise from this setting, as well as the personal journeys of Clive and his companions.

Final Fantasy 16 is one of the most anticipated games of 2023, and the demo gives players a generous sample of what to expect from it. The demo is available to download now on PS5 from the PSN store. The full game will launch on June 22, 2023, exclusively for PS5.
