What is Joni Mitchell’s Disease? Can Joni Mitchell Speak? + Best Songs

Who is Joni Mitchell

Roberta Joan “Joni” Mitchell CC is a Canadian singer-songwriter and painter.

(née Anderson; born November 7, 1943)

Drawing from folk, pop, rock, classical, and jazz, Mitchell’s songs often reflect on social and philosophical ideals as well as her feelings about romance, womanhood, disillusionment and joy. She has received many accolades, including nine Grammy Awards and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997.

Rolling Stone called her “one of the greatest songwriters ever”, and AllMusic has stated, “When the dust settles, Joni Mitchell may stand as the most important and influential female recording artist of the late 20th century”.

Joni Mitchell Says She’s ‘Still Struggling’ to Walk 5 Years After Aneurysm: ‘Inching My Way Along’

Joni Mitchell is still recovering from her 2015 aneurysm.

In a rare interview with The Guardian, the 76-year-old legendary Canadian singer-songwriter said she hasn’t written much music lately but is instead “concentrating on getting my health back.”

Can Joni Mitchell speak?

The singer-songwriter suffered a brain aneurysm in 2015 that left her temporarily unable to walk or talk. Later that year she was said to be “making good progress”

“You know what? I came back from polio, so here I am again, and struggling back,” shared Mitchell, who contracted the disease as a child. (She has also previously stated that she was suffering from Morgellons disease.) “Just inching my way along. I’m showing slow improvement but moving forward.”

The “Big Yellow Taxi” hitmaker recalls that “once again,” she “couldn’t walk” and “had to learn how to again,” as well as re-learn how to talk.

“Polio didn’t grab me like that, but the aneurysm took away a lot more, really. Took away my speech and my ability to walk. And, you know, I got my speech back quickly, but the walking I’m still struggling with,” Mitchell added.

“I always think that polio was a rehearsal for the rest of my life,” she said, referring to the disease she suffered aged nine. “I’ve had to come back several times from things. And this last one was a real whopper. But, you know, I’m hobbling along but I’m doing all right!”

What is the main cause of an aneurysm?

Any condition that causes your artery walls to weaken can bring one on. The most common culprits are atherosclerosis and high blood pressure. Deep wounds and infections can also lead to an aneurysm. Or you may be born with weakness in one of your artery walls.

What Is an Aneurysm?

If you get an aneurysm, it means you have a bulge in the wall of an artery. It happens when the pressure of blood passing through has forced a weakened part of the artery to balloon outward or when the blood vessel wall is weakened for a different reason.

Aneurysms can happen in any blood vessel, but they usually form in the belly or chest portions of your aorta — the main blood vessel that carries blood from your heart — or in arteries that nourish your brain.

Aneurysms there are serious, while those in other areas, such as your leg, can be less hazardous.

The most serious threat of an aneurysm is that it will burst and cause a stroke or massive bleeding, which can be life-threatening. A large aneurysm can affect your circulation and lead to blood clots.

It’s important to get it diagnosed and treated early. Aneurysms often have mild symptoms or none at all, so routine exams can help your doctor check for warning signs.

What happened to Joni Mitchell’s voice?

It was just a few years after the sudden brain aneurysm that stilled Mitchell’s voice and brought her the medical verdict that she’d likely never walk again. It wasn’t the first time she’d heard that.

What is Joni Mitchell’s most famous song?

One of Joni’s most successful songs, A Case Of You, from 1971’s Blue, has been covered by a huge range of artists, including Prince, Diana Krall and kd lang, and rumours still persist over who the song is about, with Leonard Cohen, Graham Nash and James Taylor all being possible inspirations.

With its Shakespearean reference points (“I am as constant as a northern star”, a reworking of a similar line from Julius Caesar), the song is a standout on an album of standouts.

Speaking about Blue, Joni Mitchell once said, “There’s hardly a dishonest note in the vocals,” and A Case Of You is perhaps the best example of that. She sings of someone “so bitter and so sweet”, and perfectly displays how difficult love can be.

Do you interpret the lines “Oh, I could drink a case of you, darling/Still I’d be on my feet/Oh I would still be on my feet” as romantic? That it’s a love she can’t get enough of and that can’t unsteady her? Or is it a sign that things aren’t working, that no matter how much love there is to give, it’s never enough, and it fails to make her feel intoxicated? Joni leaves you to decide, with such a perfect lyric you’ll never tire of hearing it.

Joni Mitchell removing her music from Spotify: ‘I stand with Neil Young’

Legendary singer and songwriter Joni Mitchell announced she will follow Neil Young’s lead and pull her music from Spotify over COVID-misinformation concerns.

The two music giants decided to abandon the streaming service in protest of it’s prized podcaster Joe Rogan, who they’ve accused of spreading fake information about COVID vaccines.

“I’ve decided to remove all my music from Spotify,” Mitchell, 78, said in a statement posted to her website on Friday. “Irresponsible people are spreading lies that are costing people their lives.”

Mitchell, whose career spans six decades, was awarded the Grammy lifetime achievement award in 2002 and was named a Kennedy Center honoree in 2021.

Her Canadian compatriot, Young, earlier this week gave Spotify an ultimatum in a since-deleted letter on his website that read: “They can have Neil Young or Rogan. Not Both.”

“I want you to let Spotify know immediately TODAY that I want all my music off their platform,” fumed the 76-year-old Grammy-winner in the note.
