What is the message in Encanto?

The heart must be restored. But all is not lost, the future is not set. That’s the message.

In Disney’s latest blockbuster, Encanto, a magical family called the Madrigals have escaped the violence and chaos of their homeland by crossing a river into an enchanted paradise that endows each with wondrous gifts that they use to protect and enhance their community. As the generations go by, however, the magic of the new world starts to fade and the family buckles under the pressure of their responsibilities while struggling to maintain the illusion that everything is fine. One grandchild, we learn, has no gift at all; another worries that she cannot keep up the appearance of perfection that is crushing her from the inside out; while another, still, panics that she is losing her superhuman strength. Luisa, the strong one, sings out her fears:
Now, two years of pandemic parenting might be playing with my mind, but I think the writers of Encanto are trying to tell us something here. Having watched the new release (twice) with my little one recently—and then listened to its soundtrack on repeat ever since—the message seems fairly clear: America is broken (but don’t worry, all is not lost).

Encanto comes from the same team as Moana, the 2016 smash; the music in both was written by the Hamilton creator, Lin-Manuel Miranda. As you might expect from Disney, both movies are full of color and life and hope, and both are classically uplifting fables with all the flair and modernity of a Miranda musical. But it’s not just the music that rhymes in these movies—the message rhymes as well.

Diane Guerrero on ‘Encanto,’ the Film’s Beautiful Message, and the Surreal Experience In Bringing Isabela to Life

She also talks about performing songs written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, and getting to be a part of another stand-out ensemble with ‘Doom Patrol.’

From Walt Disney Animation Studios, Encanto tells the story of the Madrigals, an extraordinary family who live in a magical house in the mountains of Colombia. Every child in the family has been blessed with a unique magic gift, except for Mirabel (voiced by Stephanie Beatriz), an ordinary teenager still trying to find her place and value among the generations in her vibrant and lively community when she learns that the Madrigal magic may very well be in danger.

During this 1-on-1 interview with Collider, which you can both watch and read, Diane Guerrero (who voices Mirabel’s perfect sister Isabela) talked about what being a part of Encanto means to her, how she connected with her character, the surreal experience in bringing Isabela to life, the film’s beautiful message, getting to perform songs written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, and getting to be a part of another stand-out ensemble with Doom Patrol.
Collider: With such a beautiful, magical film about the importance of family, and with so many characters and so much culture and great music and so much going on, what makes this film special to you? What does being a part of Encanto mean to you?

DIANE GUERRERO: Gosh, so many things come to mind because this film really encompasses a lot of what I strive for and what I’ve worked so hard for, which is for my family, to keep my family together, to honor my family in all of the things that I do, and sharing my gifts with the world. It’s everything that I’ve done. And of course, being from Colombia and having my family be from Colombia, it’s an incredible honor to be represented in this way, especially in a Disney film. That seemed almost impossible, especially when you think about the kind of representation that a country like Colombia has received in the past, which is mostly negative. It’s so counteractive to what I’ve actually experienced in Colombia, which is exactly what you see in the film. The love of family, the colors, the music, the food, all of those flowers, the connection to magic and that belief is very much embedded in our culture. And so, to see it represented in this way is a dream come true.

Diane Guerrero opens up about her character in ‘Encanto’

Talking about her character, Diane said, “Much like Isabella, in my early life I thrived off of the family role of being the perfect girl.

Later, I learned there’s more beauty in imperfection, because only then can we be our full selves–curious and discovering what truly makes us special within.”
She added, “I wanted to be in ‘Encanto’ because of the wonderful message of self-acceptance. This message is one I feel proud to bring to families all over the world–especially through the lens of Colombian culture and magic. It takes time to discover your power and personal truth, and if you are lucky, you get to do that with the ones you love most. And if you don’t already have those loved ones, you get to create those connections along the way.”
Based on the magical lives of the Madrigals family where every child is blessed with a unique magical power, the musical-adventure film tells the tale of the family’s survival when faced with a cruel plot that threatens the very magic that makes them special. The film recently came out on Disney+ Hotstar. (ANI).

With ‘Encanto,’ Stephanie Beatriz Finds Yet Another Voice

The actress, also featured in “In the Heights” and on the series “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” discusses her lead role as Mirabel in the latest Disney animated film.
The actress Stephanie Beatriz said goodbye to her memorable breakout role as a stern detective on “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” in September as the hit comedy show wrapped after eight seasons.

“I’ll be happy if my name is always connected to Rosa Diaz. That’s an honor,” Beatriz said of the fan-favorite character.

But 2021 was largely a year of fresh starts for the 40-year-old actress. Early in the summer she appeared as Carla, one of the salon ladies in the film adaptation of the Lin-Manuel Miranda musical “In the Heights.” She also became a mother for the first time.

Voice acting, a skill she can trace back to when she and her sister pretended to host radio shows with a Fisher-Price tape recorder, also represents a steady aspect of her output, most recently in Netflix’s acclaimed animated limited series “Maya and the Three.”

A self-anointed “Disney adult”— her bachelorette party was held at Disneyland — Beatriz felt overjoyed when she was cast to voice Mirabel, the Latina heroine in the studio’s 60th animated feature “Encanto,” set in Colombia. Becoming part of the legacy of magical tales she grew up watching (“Sleeping Beauty” is a personal favorite), in an adventure about her father’s homeland, stunned her.
