What is the Fortnite Lightning Cup

What is the Fortnite Lightning Cup? What are Modes Formats?

Epic Games has announced two new tournament formats coming soon to competitive Fortnite. Dubbed Fortnite Lightning World Cup, this latest variation features a different take on the usual scoring system and format. While its purpose is unknown, Epic seems to be workshopping new concepts to give tournaments a fresh overhaul.

What is the Fortnite Lightning Cup?

In a series of tweets, Fortnite Competitive has explained in detail what the Lightning Cup is all about. According to this, there will be two Lightning Cup events in the game starting next week. These cups are tournaments without a prize pool where players can compete against each other. Epic is looking to host regular Fortnite Lightning Hype Cup this season to fill the weekly tournament schedule. Formats, game mechanics, and weapons may change from cup to cup!

The first Lightning Cup of this Season, themed “Zero Build” will take place on April 5, 2022, at 7:00 PM in Europe. The second one will happen on April 7, 2022, at 19:00. However, in the Fortnite Lightning Cash Cup there will be no usual prize pool. Epic Games seems to want to test the waters in this mode first. On the other hand, Chapter 3 Season 2 games will still be played on their original schedule.

Fortnite Best Of Lightning Cup (PRIZEPOOL)

These Rules have been designed to ensure the integrity of competitive play of Fortnite (the “Game”) in connection with the Event, and are intended to promote vigorous competition and to help ensure that all competitive play of the Game is fun, fair, and free from Toxic Behavior (as defined below).

To participate in the Fortnite Lightning Cup Event, each player must agree (or, if a Minor (as defined below), such player’s parent or legal guardian must agree on such player’s behalf) to follow these Rules at all times, including the Code of Conduct in Section 8. A player (or, if a Minor, such player’s parent or legal guardian) may accept these Rules by clicking to accept or agree to these Rules, where this option is made available to you by Epic Games, Inc. (“Epic”) in the Game client. By participating in any game or match that is part of the Event, a player is confirming that he or she (or, if a Minor, his or her parent or legal guardian) has accepted these Rules pursuant to this Section 1.2.

Epic will have primary responsibility for enforcing these Rules to Fortnite Lightning Cup for all players at the Event and may, working with the Event Administrators (as defined below), impose sanctions on players for violations of these Rules, as further described in Section 9.

Epic may update, revise, change, or modify these Rules from time to time. For each player in Fortnite Lightning Cup, his or her participation in the Event after any update, revision, change, or modification to these Rules will be deemed acceptance by such player (or, if a Minor, such player’s parent or legal guardian) of these Rules as updated, revised, changed, or modified.

The new Fortnite tournament mode’s formats

In the Lightning Cup, new formats are expected to be implemented. The “Best Of” and “High Score” formats are also new to competitive. The concepts were broken down on their Twitter account, and what it essentially indicates is that the number of eliminations is large.

  • “Best of” – Only your top five matches out of seven will contribute toward the Leaderboard. You and your partner can participate in up to 7 matches in 2 hours. However, only your 5 best matches will count towards your ranking on the leaderboard.
  • “High Score” – The only match that counts towards the Leaderboard is your best match in the last 2 hours. You and your partner can participate in as many matches as you want in 3 hours. However, only your best match will count towards your ranking on the leaderboard. Also, you can switch duo partners during this event to try and get an even higher score!
  • “Zero Build” Lightning Cup: You will need three more mates for this Lightning Cup. It also takes place in Fortnite’s new “Zero Build” mode. That means you have to concentrate on your aim and find cover elsewhere.

Teams must win a Victory Royale and a large number of eliminations to earn a spot on the Leaderboard. As a result, it’s safe to expect that the matches in this Fortnite competition will be difficult and exhausting for the participants.

All formats deviate significantly from what we usually see in competitive Fortnite. “Best” sounds interesting, because generally, all seven matches in a given season count towards a team’s overall score. Instead, the format allows for two throwaway games, which will not factor into leaderboard positioning.

In contrast, the “high score” format is also unique. As mentioned above, this structure takes into account only the best match of a team in two hours. Higher scores may rely more on random number generators (RNGs). Fortnite’s built-in ELO rating system leads to lower level matches in the first game of each tournament.

You must be wondering what does this mean. Well, teams that build 20 or 30 Elimination Victory Royale will be well ahead of the competition. Those high-elimination matches will become more challenging as the tournament progresses.

After The Fortnite Lightning World Cup

Then, in 2020, the pandemic came and changed everything. The hopes for another Fortnite Lightning World Cup plummeted. You couldn’t imagine such an event with so many people… But what now? We are all moving towards a “normal” life again, and the stadiums in football or other sports are getting fuller.

Well, in June 2021. EPIC Games published a message on their homepage. They stated that they did not plan to host in-person events until Q2, 2022.

The second quarter starts on April 1st, 2022 and the situation in the world is getting better and better. And now we’re hearing rumors about another Fortnite Lightning World Cup. At the moment nothing is officially confirmed, but we can expect something soon. Another World Championship will surely be high on the list of priorities at EPIC Games.

The World Champion Bugha

Bugha alone took home $3 million at the time. But, what do you do with so much money at this age? The American was just 16 at the time, making him the second youngest esports millionaire of all time. However, he spoke about it in an interview immediately after the win and said:

“I just want to get back home and keep playing Fortnite Lightning Cup.”

This shows us the mentality of Bugha very clearly. He doesn’t rest on his laurels, he just keeps going. He’s built different.
