Fortnite Covert Ops Quests: The Free Secret Sledge Pickaxe + How To Complete Quests

Covert Ops quest Phase 3 is now live in Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 2. Here’s how you can complete it and earn the rewards.

Fortnite Covert Ops Quests: How To Earn The Free Secret Sledge Pickaxe

Fortnite’s v20.20 update is bringing a slew of changes for players, and from April 22 to May 2, The Origin will have Covert Ops Quests available for everyone willing to take them on. The reward? The Secret Sledge pickaxe, a free harvesting tool cosmetic to use in-game. There will be a total of four quests, with each quest lasting for either two or four days. Players will also need to have completed the previous quest before being able to start the next quest, so since each quest is only available for a limited time, make sure to knock each Covert Ops quest out before the time expires.

Upon completion of the Covert Ops questline, players will receive a token that will allow access to the next Covert Ops quest when it’s time for the quest to unlock. iFireMonkey also shared a preview of what the Secret Sledge will look like, which, in what shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone, is a large sledgehammer. It has red, yellow, orange, maroon, and black accents on the hammer’s head with a long black handle.

Each quest will remain active until the minute the next one starts, so if you just need to complete one last objective and it’s 8 AM ET, then you’ll still have 59 minutes to finish the quest and become eligible for the next one. Make sure to check back here as each quest goes live for guides on how to complete them and claim that Secret Sledge pickaxe for yourself. Until then, take a look at the new changes in v20.20 or our list of best landing spots in Chapter 3, Season 2.

Covert OPS Quests in ZERO Build Stage 4 – FINAL STAGE – SECRET SLEDGE – Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 2

The first quest of the Phase 3 Covert Ops requires you to establish a device uplink in Zero Build. The quest section will mark all the places where you can establish device uplink though it doesn’t reveal the exact location of those places.

We established the device near Rocky Reels, and you will find its exact location in the screenshot above. It is south of the big Rocky Reels billboard. Establishing the device uplink will start the second quest of Phase 3, in which you have to destroy structures with a tank.

How to destroy structures with Tank in Fortnite

Epic Games introduced tanks in Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 2. You can find one in all the named locations like The Daily Bugle, Rocky Reels, Condo Canyons, Tilted Towers Coney Crossroads, Command Cavern, and The Fortress.

We recommend taking the one in Condo Canyons as you won’t find it surrounded by hordes of IO members. However, other players may have the same idea, so make sure to scout your surroundings carefully.

Even if you find a tank that someone else is driving – an IO member or a player, run towards it and enter the turret. You can easily destroy any structures using the tank’s turret despite not driving it.

Destroying the required amount of structures will complete the quest and get you one step closer to completing the Covert Ops questline.

How Do I Complete Fortnite Covert Ops Quests?

Since only the first set of Fortnite Covert Ops quests are out, those are the only ones we can break down right now. Be sure to check back on the dates listed above to see which new objectives you’ll have to complete if you want all the rewards.

Quest 1 requires you to establish a device uplink in Zero Build mode. It’s something players will be familiar with if they’ve been completing the main Rift missions since Chapter 3 started. There are plenty of uplink sites dotted around the map, especially in crowded areas like Tilted Towers. Simply head to one of those, hold down the action button, and the second set of tasks will unlock.

This second objective requires that you eliminate ten enemy players in Zero Build modes. Note that this only includes real opponents, so the IO Forces NPCs who you encounter across the map won’t count.

Of course, once the other objectives land in Fortnite, we’ll update this guide to let you know what they are.

What Are The Fortnite Covert Ops Quest Rewards?

Each of the four phases of Covert Ops missions nets you 30,000 XP. It’s not a staggering amount, but it’ll definitely help you progress up the battle pass if you’re aiming for Tier 100.

Combined with the natural XP you’ll unlock on these reasonably substantial objectives, then you will end up pocketing quite a few tiers’ worth of XP on your journey. On top of that, if you manage to complete all four phases, you unlock an exclusive pickaxe for your troubles. Sadly, it doesn’t appear like there are any rewards on top of those.

Plant timed explosives at an IO Airship, Command Cavern, or the Fortress in Fortnite Zero Build mode

To complete the above quest, players will have to drop onto the Chapter 3 map and navigate to the following locations: IO Airship, Command Cavern, or the Fortress.

All of these locations are popular IO bases and strongholds. Based on the ongoing lore of the season, loopers are a part of the “Resistance” led by the Seven. Therefore, players will have to destroy an IO stronghold with timed bombs in this quest.

Fortress is the easiest location to crack for this quest. Located moderately northwest of the island, players will be able to spot the IO base if they zoom in on the map in the region.

Once players drop down in the region, they will be able to locate a huge drill tank guarded by IO guards. Be cautioned as these guards will continue shooting as soon as players get near the base.

The bombs are already attached near the base and are highlighted with white light. All three bombs are located on the ground. Two of the bombs are located on each of the wider sides of the base.

The last one is located beneath the base. Players can quickly find all three bombs and activate them by pressing the action button. Once all three bombs are activated, a notification will show that the quest has been completed.
