The 2026 World Cup Mega-Preview: Schedule, Predictions, and the Golden Generation

Everyone is using artificial intelligence to do, well, everything. With the World Cup starting on June 11, you can’t scroll for more than a couple of minutes without hitting another post telling you how they used AI to predict the tournament. But here is what happens when a human being predicts the outcome of the 2026 World Cup.

This is already the biggest World Cup ever, with the field having been expanded to 48 teams, which means we will have 38.5% more matches than we did four years ago.

The Schedule & Key Dates

With all 48 teams now qualified for the 2026 World Cup, here’s your day-by-day breakdown of the 37-day tournament, which kicks off in Mexico on June 11 with 103 matches leading up to the World Cup final at the MetLife Stadium on July 19.

  • Group stage: June 11-27
  • Round of 32: June 28 to July 3
  • Round of 16: July 4-7
  • Quarter-finals: July 9-11
  • Semi-finals: July 14-15
  • Final: July 19

Group Predictions & Bracket Outlook

  • Group A: Mexico are heavy favorites for two reasons: (1) They get to play every game at home. (2) They lucked out with the draw. Neither South Korea nor Czechia have the talent levels of golden generations past, while South Africa are one of the weakest teams in the tournament.
  • Group B: As you might expect from a team managed by Jesse Marsch, Canada are going to press when they can. Their toughest match will come against Switzerland, who are a team that continues to produce top-level talent you’ll see playing in the Champions League.
  • Group C: Brazil have the fourth-best odds of winning the World Cup. The talent of this team, though, isn’t quite what it used to be. Morocco—with their fantastic defense and their lawyer-awarded AFCON title—seem like the only team likely to challenge Carlo Ancelotti’s group in the group stages.
  • Group D: The rating gap between the U.S. and Paraguay is smaller than the gap between England and France. In Group D, anyone can beat anyone, so there’s a very real chance that three points won’t be enough to finish third.

Spain: The Team to Beat?

Led by some outrageously young and talented players, are Spain set to repeat another Euro-World Cup double in 2026?

The reigning European champions arguably boast the finest collection of Spanish talent since the 2008 and 2012 golden generation that swept all before them, and arguably come into the 2026 World Cup as the team to beat. Their perfect run to the 2024 Euros trophy demonstrated how far ahead they were of Europe’s elite, as they beat England, France and hosts Germany. Spain have now gone 28 games unbeaten in normal time since March 2024.

Barcelona’s star right winger Lamine Yamal broke through at Euro 2024 at the age of 16, and has only gotten better since to become the world’s most exciting young player. Lamal is one of eight players from the Catalan club in the squad, while Spain will go to a World Cup without a Real Madrid player for the first time.

La Roja start with what should be their easiest game in Group H as they face minnows Cape Verde. Saudi Arabia are capable of causing an upset, but will likely be blown away by Spain’s quality and power. Uruguay pose the stiffest test, and Spain will have to face them in the unrelenting heat of Guadalajara, Mexico.

Al Jazeera’s prediction: Champions. Spain have a new emerging golden generation that is young, hungry and already accustomed to winning. If their stars are fit and firing, La Roja will be very hard to stop.
