What Do Teens Mean When They Talk About an Aesthetic

In the most basic definition, aesthetic means: concerned with beauty or the appreciation of beauty (that’s the dictionary definition).

When applied to teens and social media, it means:

“In reference to social media, the term “aesthetic” is usually used to refer to the overall visual theme and mood of an account. Most often associated with Instagram.”

This definition mentions Instagram, but it also applies to Tik Tok, Snapchat, etc.

As I mentioned above, Cottagecore is one of the currently popular aesthetics which is highlighted by the newest Taylor Swift album. Cottagecore is an aesthetic that is pastoral leaning. You’ll see lots of pictures of nature and picnic baskets and girls in long, flowing prairie dresses. Cottagecore is vintage and antiques in outdoor spaces with pastel flowers and sheets hanging on outdoors drying lines.

The Teen says it’s has bright, soft lighting.

Corragecore is not, however, the only popular aesthetic. Last year I was asked to buy Thing 2 hair scrunchies and Hydroflask water bottles because of the VSCO aesthetic. You can even find articles and ideas about VSCO girl starter packs on popular teen sites like Teen Vogue:

There are other aesthetics popular with teens: soft girls and dark academia and afrofuturism.

Aesthetics is about branding. Branding oneself. But also, brands have latched onto the idea of aesthetics to market to Gen Z as well. I even used this concept recently, without really knowing I was doing so, when I created an RA list of readalikes for Billie Eilish fans and one for Taylor Swift fans. I was applying the concept of the aesthetic with book recommendations.

When reading about aesthetics you will quickly find that a lot of the aesthetics being talked about in the media are very white centered, as unfortunately a lot of the media always has. As teen librarians, a field dominated by white women, we need to be really careful when reading about and thinking about using the idea of aesthetics as promotional tools not to become too white focused and exclusionary. So engage in research and promotion with intention and an eye to inclusion, as you should all things.
This is a screenshot of a recent RA tool I made to discuss the various genres and subgenres with my coworkers as we walk through learning about YA lit

I wanted to check and see if this idea of an aesthetic was just something adults were putting on to teens or if it was a thing teens talked about, so I went and consulted with my sources. They immediately began to talk to me about various aesthetics and seemed pretty interested in the concept. Sometimes the media talks about teens in ways that don’t resonate with teens, but the teens I talked to were very much aware of the concept of aesthetics on social media.

What Is Cottagecore? A Closer Look at the Dreamy Aesthetic Taking Over the Internet

Celebrate life’s simplest pleasures by filling your house with charming, cozy decor.

Our homes should be our personal sanctuaries , and the last year made this abundantly clear. As a result, some of us turned closets into office hideouts (aptly named “cloffices”), transformed garages into home gyms and finally checked major renovations off of our bucket lists. At the heart of these transformations — from minor DIYs to big rebuilds — is the very idea that our homes should be a safe, cozy and inviting space that provides a respite from the outside world.

There’s no finer example of this feeling , aesthetic, rather — than cottagecore, where the ease of rural life is brought to life with fresh florals, botanical accents and vintage-inspired decor.

Social media gave this blossoming movement a major platform: To date, there have been 1.6 million posts tagged with #cottagecore on Instagram and videos with the same tag have racked up 5.8 billion views on TikTok.

Together, these photos and videos provide a space to breathe — TikTok user Lillies Apothecary shares recipes for cinnamon coffee cake and lavender lemonade, TikTok user Jesca Her shows the life she sees “through rose-colored glasses” and thousands more reveal how they cozy up their bedrooms with green ivy and twinkle lights.

How can I bring the cottagecore aesthetic into my house?

Styles may range from person to person (or house to house), but the cottagecore aesthetic has several constants: Along with a neutral color palette (whites, creams and warm tones), key decor pieces include dried flower bouquets, houseplants, mushroom trinkets and string lights. Everything — both the fashion and home decor — has a vintage look and feel, ranging from ruffled peasant dresses to floral ceramic dishware sets.

10 Types of Aesthetics

elieve it or not but aesthetics have been around for years. Back in the day, it used to be the emos, the horse girls, the prepsters, the jocks — think that scene in Mean Girls where Damian shows Cady where the different groups sit in the cafeteria.

Thanks to the popularity of Instagram and, more recently TikTok, new aesthetics have appeared. There are, of course, some older ones that have been reincarnated for 2021.
But here are 10 popular aesthetics if you’re looking to change up your outfits — or brush up on your internet vernacular.

E-Girl

Inspired by anime, the e-girl usually has dyed hair , particularly the front sections of her hair.

She uses makeup to accentuate her eyes and cheeks, often drawing on fake freckles and using blush to give her cheeks an extra rosy hue. Hair clips, mesh clothing, choker necklaces, and silver jewellery are some key items to pull off this gamer vibe.

VSCO Girl
Named after the popular photo editing app (pronounced visco) this type of style includes white sneakers or Birkenstocks, high-waisted jeans or shorts, oversized T-shirts, and scrunchies. Messy buns are also a part of the equation here that low-key basic look.

Soft Girl
This is similar to the VSCO girl but with more drama. These outfits often include pastel colours and look ultra-romantic — think pleated skirts, florals, sweater vests, and cardigans. However, some put an edgier spin on it with chunky boots, baguette bags and statement sunglasses. But the overall aura is “soft”.

Grunge
Inspired by bands from the 80s and 90s, this aesthetic includes loads of mesh, plaid, mixed prints, combat boots, and layered choker necklaces. It also helps if you have a few guitars laying around.

Cottagecore
It kind of says it in the name, but imagine you live in a cute cottage surrounded by greenery and lounge around in your flowy linen dresses all day. Think Little House on the Prarie. Check brands like DOEN and Christy Dawn for ultimate cottagecore goals.

Instagram Aesthetic: How To Build Your Brand

Today we are talking all about Instagram Aesthetics!

How to build it, how important it is and some of the apps I use to help me keep my feed clean and organized. I share all of my basic rules and how you can use your IG aesthetic to grow your following or get brand partnerships! Are IG aesthetics important to you?

5 Different Types of Aesthetics

The word “aesthetic” first appeared in the 18th century under the study of philosophy. British philosophers used the word to refer to “a kind of object, a kind of judgment, a kind of attitude, a kind of experience, and a kind of value.” It was derived from the concept of taste in reaction to the rise of rationalism at that time.

Whether you judge based on rationale or based on your taste, we can all appreciate what we consider aesthetic no matter what form it takes or what field it may belong to.

Here are the different types of aesthetics:

Art

Emotionalism

With emotionalism, the expressive qualities of the artwork are the most important. There is a vivid quality in the artwork that explicitly expresses feelings, ideas, and moods.

Formalism
Formalism is an art form that emphasizes aspects that are purely visual. If you paint something that puts emphasis on lines, colors, textures, and shapes, then that is an example of formalism. This means that other things are considered not as important as its form, including its historical background.

Imitationalism
Also known as representational art, imitationalism is there with the goal of having the art look realistic; in other words, this is an art that represents what real people see in the real world. Therefore, if you’re making a sculpture or painting using imitationalism, the artwork will portray just what you want the viewer to see.

Instrumentalism
Instrumentalist art emphasizes a purpose or a specific message; it is very functional and visual, and it has the goal of influencing society. In other words, if the art serves a purpose, it is known as instrumentalist art.

Zodiac Signs

Concert aesthetic. Examples include large crowds, lots of waving of hands in a crowd, beer cups were strewn all over, fishnet stockings that are ripped, and intense performances, to name a few.

Movies

Art and Technology
Making a movie requires expert ability, in both the technical and the artistic sense, because it takes both of these skills for a movie to come out just right. Technology plays an integral part in movie-making, especially when it comes to your artistic options. For example, take a look at the following techniques.

Frame, Flux, and Sound
These are broad areas, but they are the main factors when making a movie. Here is a description of each of these three terms.

Mise-en-Scene
This is a French phrase that means “placing on stage,” and it refers to all elements which end up in a specific scene.

Point of View
Every shot in a movie is taken from a specific point of view, or POV. Most stories are told from a particular point of view, and the relationship between the observer and the character will determine which POV you choose. Below are two things to consider.

Landscape and Literature

Pastoral

When you think of the genre known as pastoral, you likely picture the pleasures associated with rural life. Picture shepherds and milk-maids, as well as celebrations of the simple pleasures in life.

Sensibility
Sensibility merely refers to people’s capacity to feel and how they experience various emotions. Often, if you have a stronger sense of feeling emotions, it is just as having a greater sense of taste, because a higher sense of emotions affects all of your senses. Thus, in literature, sensibility usually includes strong emotional responses to almost everything.

The Beautiful
If the sublime is masculine, the beautiful aesthetic is its feminine counterpart. Instead of overwhelming people with its power and vastness, beautiful aesthetics are based in softness and powerlessness. It also presents an image of needing to be protected.

The Gothic
The Gothic form of architecture represents cultural nostalgia and a fascination with the un-modern, as well as with haunted buildings, superstitions, and even violence. It started in the second half of the 18th century, and it contains obsession with chivalry and anything that exists outside of the social order of things.

The Picturesque
If you picture a beautiful landscape painting, you can visualize what the picturesque aesthetic represents. Whether it is a painting of extraordinary mountains, the deep blue sea, architectural ruins, a quiet mountain cottage, or a winding stream, this is a picturesque aesthetic in action.

The Sublime
This aesthetic has to do with a feeling of vastness and power. When you look at the Grand Canyon, for example, you can feel awfully small. If we read lines in a poem that are sublime or view subjects that are sublime, we get a certain amount of satisfaction from them, even feeling like we, too, are a little more enhanced from the experience. We are uplifted and our souls are fulfilled.

Aesthetics

Aesthetics, or esthetics, is a branch of philosophy that deals with the nature of beauty and taste, as well as the philosophy of art

(its own area of philosophy that comes out of aesthetics).

It examines aesthetic values often expressed through judgments of taste.

Aesthetics covers both natural and artificial sources of aesthetic experience and judgment. It considers what happens in our minds when we engage with aesthetic objects or environments such as viewing visual art, listening to music, reading poetry, experiencing a play, or exploring nature.

The philosophy of art specifically studies how artists imagine, create, and perform works of art, as well as how people use, enjoy, and criticize art. Aesthetics considers why people like some works of art and not others, as well as how art can affect moods or even our beliefs.

Both aesthetics and the philosophy of art ask questions like “What is art?,” “What is a work of art?,” and “What makes good art?”

Scholars in the field have defined aesthetics as “critical reflection on art, culture and nature”.

In modern English, the term “aesthetic” can also refer to a set of principles underlying the works of a particular art movement or theory (one speaks, for example, of a Renaissance aesthetic).
