Gucci turns Hollywood Walk of Fame into star-studded fashion show runway

With stars like Gwyneth Paltrow and Serena Williams sitting in the front row, Alessandro Michele’s nostalgic clothing designs inspired by old Hollywood glam shined just as bright during a Gucci fashion show in Los Angeles.

GUCCI Fashion Show Hollywood

Jared Leto and Macaulay Culkin were among the many models who calmly pranced down the Walk of Fame runway at the Gucci Love Parade on Tuesday night. It was such a splashy spectacle that the event shut down a few blocks of busy Hollywood Boulevard.

That gave the models enough room to strut out of the iconic TCL Chinese Theatre before walking down both sidewalks alongside a star-studded audience that included such popular figures as Salma Hayek, Lizzo, Miley Cyrus, Lindsey Vonn, Dwyane Wade, Gabrielle Union, James Corden, Dapper Dan, Tracee Ellis Ross and Tyler, the Creator.

With his new collection, Michele brought his love for old cinematic wardrobes to life with cowboy hats, feathered gowns, faux fur coats, diamond tiaras, crop tops, wide leg pants and voluminous dresses.

He offered a mixture of colors through his models who wore lavender, teal and hot pink suits along with metallic and gold gowns. Black was another color of preference.

Some models wore chunky silver platform shoes, patent leather flats and white pointy boots. Another popular accessary was face jewelry around the nose and cheekbones.

The Italian designer also featured small to plus-sized models.

“I think with fashion, you have a duty to give a voice,” Michele, the creative director of Gucci, said after the show. “I see beauty everywhere. It’s something which is organic and natural.”

Leto, who will star in the upcoming film “House of Gucci,” drew applause while he walked the runway sporting an oversized double-breasted blazer with no shirt, laced leather white pants and white boots. Culkin wore a colorful jacket with a blue Hawaiian-styled shirt, brown slacks and a white Gucci belt.

For Michele, it was a dream come true to unveil his work on the boulevard of stars, where he said holding the show reflected his “uncurbed love for the classic world.”

“It’s a bit like home,” said the Italian designer, who recalled hearing about the glitzy Hollywood scene from his mother, who worked in the film industry as an assistant at a production company.

Gucci is about to get the Hollywood treatment.

Ridley Scott, of Blade Runner and Thelma & Louise fame, has made a juicy movie, out later this month, about the Italian family’s murderous history starring Lady Gaga.

“It was a name that sounded so sweet, so seductive; synonymous with worth,” she purrs in the trailer. Of course, Gucci’s name has long been linked with Hollywood, and its connection with the movies was everywhere you looked at Alessandro Michele’s fab spring 2022 show tonight.

There, in the front row, was Gwyneth Paltrow, wearing an updated version of the Tom Ford-designed red velvet Gucci tux she sported circa 1996.

And there, on the runway, were a dozen celebrity “friends of Gucci,” including Macaulay Culkin, Miranda July, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Jared Leto, who has his own starring role in Scott’s film. The backdrop was the iconic Chinese Theater and Hollywood Boulevard itself—“that temple of the gods,” Michele called it.

Michele credits his mother, a movie buff and an assistant in a production company, with encouraging his love of old Hollywood. But equally this collection was about contemporary Los Angeles, a place the designer first visited at the age of 27 and that he has much affection for. “LA is not a fashion city, but it’s so fashionable,” he said backstage before the show. “Sometimes they are not appropriate, but in being not appropriate they are so precise. Maybe it belongs to my way of looking at fashion—it’s personal.”

Gucci Love Parade: Macaulay Culkin and Jared Leto among catwalk stars

Jared Leto, Macaulay Culkin and Jodie Turner-Smith were among the stars who took part in Gucci’s Love Parade on Hollywood Boulevard on Tuesday.

The fashion show saw the famous street transformed into an outdoor catwalk.

Gucci’s creative director Alessandro Michele debuted a string of designs, watched by celebrities including Miley Cyrus, Lizzo and Billie Eilish.

The show’s timing was unusual, in that it did not fall as part of the London, Milan, Paris or New York fashion weeks.

Michele announced in May 2020 that Gucci would abandon the traditional fashion calendar in favour of its own standalone shows twice a year.

The Love Parade took place outside the Dolby Theatre, where the red carpet is rolled out every year for the Oscars.

Jared Leto was among several A-list actors who not only attended the show, but starred in it as models.

The 49-year-old has a particular connection to the brand – he’s set to play Paolo Gucci in the forthcoming film House of Gucci, which also stars Lady Gaga and Adam Driver.
British actress Jodie Turner-Smith wore an eye-catching red and green feathered coat from the designer’s new collection.

Turner-Smith is best known for starring in Queen & Slim and earlier this year she played Anne Boleyn in a three-part series for Channel 5.

Perhaps the most surprising model to be spotted on the catwalk was Home Alone star Macaulay Culkin.

While his brother Kieran is currently starring in the third season of Emmy-winning drama Succession, Macaulay has kept a slightly lower profile in his adult life.

“The arrival of former child star Macaulay Culkin was something of a plot twist,” said Vogue’s Alice Cary. “[He] strode along Hollywood Boulevard in the suitably nostalgic combo of a Hawaiian shirt under a floral bomber jacket. The finishing touches? Seventies-style tinted sunglasses and a pair of horsebit clogs.”

“It’s a dream come true, a huge, great, immense feeling for me,” said Alessandro Michele after his Gucci show that shut down Hollywood Boulevard.

Set to a medley of Björk tracks like “All is Full of Love” and “Big Time Sensuality,” the Gucci “Love Parade” show was a whirlwind tour through Hollywood lore. Western heroes mixed with silver screen starlets, modern juice cleansers walked alongside retro pin-ups, and a group of true Hollywood legends like Macaulay Culkin, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Jared Leto took turns on the runway.

Backstage, photographer Emily Malan was on site to shoot the models and celebrities in their first looks. Even with its disparate and diverse references, the Gucci collection came together thanks to Michele’s magpie eye. His is a world where a little sex toy-inspired jewelry can live in harmony with pristine velvet tailoring and nymph-like golden snake dresses—and isn’t that sort of like Hollywood itself? In his press notes, Michele described Hollywood and its actors as “the idols of a new contemporary cosmogony.”

The Gucci pantheon of fashionable fame lives by the same principle as Hollywood: Everyone is just one audition—or one accessory—from being a star.
