Where to find Elden Ring Smithing Stones

Limgrave Tunnels is close to the beginning of the game, Northwest of the optional boss fight dragon Agheel where the cliffs taper to a point.

Limgrave Tunnels is a mid-sized dungeon with a boss at the bottom – the Stonedigger Troll – but you don’t have to fight him for your valuable Smithing Stones. Instead, the area is full of enemies mining the walls – look for the gold outcroppings and interact with them to get the Smithing Stones you’re looking for! They’re not unlimited, but you’ll find of a decent number of tier 1 Smithing Stones, so you’ll be able to upgrade your weapon to +3 at a Smithing Table if you get enough – we’ve got you covered if you need to know how to strengthen weapons in Elden Ring too.

The miner enemies in the tunnels also have a small chance of dropping level 1 Smithing Stones, so you can farm them to try and get a few more. Although there are plenty of other farming locations that are easily accessible out in Limgrave.

There’s a toppled statue on the cliffs directly North of the Stormgate with a light-filled crack running down it. Aggro one of the giant trolls nearby and lure it over – if it hits the statue it’ll break, giving you five tier one Elden Ring Smithing Stones and a single tier 2 stone to boot!

Once you’re done with that, the best place to find tier 2 Smithing Stones to get your regular armaments up to is inside Stormveil Castle itself. They’re lying around everywhere, though not especially common – we actually struggled to find tier 2 Smithing Stones more than any other kind – but once you get through Stormveil Castle you can start getting them a lot easier.

Where to farm Smithing Stones in Elden Ring

Most Smithing Stones can be farmed from various enemies, though there are tons to find hidden in the Lands Between.

Smithing Stone 1 is a relatively common drop from soldier enemies. The best early place to farm Smithing Stones is near the Stormveil Gate in Limgrave. There’s a nearby Shine of Marika and a Site of Grace just down the road. Certain starting classes like the Astrologer can bait the watchmen into sounding a horn and using area-of-effect abilities to quickly clear them out.

Smithing Stone 2 farming is harder to come by but is manageable for determined players. Tarnished who have earned their first Great Rune can head to Raya Lucaria’s crystalline caves. At the very bottom, an enemy will drop an item that lets the Twin Maiden Husks in Roundtable sell unlimited Smithing Stone 2. A similar item grants access to unlimited Smithing Stone 3. War Counselor Iji in Caria also sells unlimited Smithing Stone 2.

Beyond that, Smithing Stones can only be acquired by open-world exploration. High-tier stones like 8 and 9 are extremely rare and are sometimes given as NPC quest rewards. Keep an eye out in the Lands Between for these unfarmable Smithing Stones. New players don’t have to worry about that for the time being, and instead can focus on getting the basics down for a strong start.

How to Buy Unlimited Smithing Stones

While areas like the Limgrave Tunnels have quite a few Smithing Stone 1s and some Smithing Stone 2s, once you loot the walls, you are left to rely on the low drop chance from killing miners.

Fortunately, there are ways you can buy an unlimited number of Smithing Stones of many different kinds, meaning you can more easily experiment with weapons you are interested in without running out of supplies.

How to Buy Unlimited Smithing Stones 1 and 2

In the area of Liurnia of the Lakes (in the lower, marshy area) you’ll find a Site of Grace called “Academy Gate Town.” From there, ride north and follow the cliffs and you’ll find the Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel.

Head down to the bottom level and defeat the boss (use Strike weapons and block, then circle around and backstab to have the easiest time) to obtain the Smithing-Stone Miner’s Bell Bearing.

Return to Roundtable Hold and talk to the Maiden Husks. Select “give bell bearing” and then hand it over to add infinite Smithing Stone 1 and 2s to their inventory.

That’s everything you need to know about Smithing Stones in Elden Ring.
