What is the Watch at the end of Hawkeye? The Rolex on Hawkeye Just Revealed a Major Marvel Twist

Laura Barton and the Rolex Watch

Clint succeeds in making it home for Christmas, bringing along Kate and her renamed dog Lucky.

During this reunion with his family, Clint proceeds to hand over the mysterious Rolex watch that was in the Avengers Compound during the finale of Avengers: Endgame, only to be sold on the black market. A watch that could expose the identity of somebody “out of the game.”

What did the watch at the end of Hawkeye mean?

Laura gives a heartful, “Thank you,” before turning the Rolex over to reveal a SHIELD logo and the number 19. Even though Laura Barton has been part of the MCU since 2015, we never did know much about her other than being Clint’s secret wife. Now we know that she was also an agent of SHIELD.

The Significance Of The Hawkeye Finale’s Watch

what was the watch at the end of hawkeye?

Well, the Hawkeye finale just aired, and there’s one mystery that was resolved in a rather cool way.

All season, Clint’s wife Laura has been asking him if he has managed to secure a watch that was found in the ruins of the Avengers compound, one that seems to have some amount of value to both her and the bad guys wanting to steal it.

In the closing moments of the episode, Clint reveals that yes, he did secure the watch. He gives it to Laura, and she turns it over, revealing a SHIELD logo.

At first, I thought this was just a nod to the idea that she used to be a SHIELD agent, which is how she and Clint met. It shows it really fast, and I thought it maybe had her initials on it.
But, if you freeze frame it, as reader Alejandro Segovia first pointed out to me, it’s actually the numbers “19.”

Now, we’re getting into comic territory. What Hawkeye is implying here is that Clint’s wife Laura used to be Agent 19 at SHIELD, aka “Mockingbird,” a famous hero who ended up married to Clint in the comics.

Of course, fans of the MCU will remember that Agents of SHIELD already introduced its own Mockingbird in the form of Bobbi Morse, played by Adrianne Palicki.

She was on the show awhile, and was supposed to get her own spin-off with her onscreen husband Lance Hunter, but that series was not picked up, and Palicki is now starring on The Orville these days.

The Hawkeye Finale Finally Explained What’s Up With That Watch

Obviously, in order to explain the details of the “Hawkeye” watch mystery, we’ll have to dive into spoilers

Throughout the first (and only?) season of “Hawkeye,” there was a lingering mystery concerning a certain Rolex watch that was recovered from the wreckage of the Avengers compound that was destroyed by Thanos in the climax of “Avengers: Endgame.”

For some reason, the Tracksuit Mafia was tasked with stealing the watch from the same underground auction where the Clint Barton‘s Ronin sword and costume were up for sale.

What is the watch in hawkeye?

But we didn’t learn the significance of this watch until the backend of the “Hawkeye” finale that arrived on Disney+ today. Funnily enough, it’s not really the watch that’s the important — it’s who it belongs to that’s the big deal.

After drawing out the mystery for several weeks, Hawkeye Episode 6 confirms that the Rolex watch Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) was so intent on recapturing from the Tracksuit Mafia did, indeed, belong to his wife, Laura Barton (Linda Cardellini). The episode further reveals that the watch was one that Laura used to wear during her days as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent.

What’s even more interesting, however, is that the underside of Laura’s old watch not only features the S.H.I.E.L.D. emblem, but also the number “19” engraved underneath it. Shown very clearly in an insert shot at the end of Hawkeye Episode 6, the detail seems to confirm that Laura used to be Agent 19, the same code name given to Bobbi Morse (aka, Mockingbird) in the comics.

The Rolex on Hawkeye Could Have Just Revealed a Major Marvel Twist

Who knew that a Rolex watch could give us one of the biggest surprises to come out of Hawkeye?

The six-episode Disney+ series has mostly focused on the superhero origin story of Kate Bishop, the young hero who admires Clint Barton’s Hawkeye and who, eventually, takes up his mantle as he steps away from the superhero life.

As it turns out, though, there’s been another potential superhero in front of us the whole time, and that Rolex watch is what finally gave us the reveal.

It’s all about that ending scene, where Clint “rescues” the watch from the Avengers compound rubble and brings it home to give to his wife, Laura. He teases her about “taking better care of her things,” making it clear the watch belonged to her before it got lost. So far, so good. But then Laura flips the watch over — the Rolex watch in question appears to be the Datejust 31 Oystersteel model — and we see a very familiar symbol on the back: the stylized eagle logo of S.H.I.E.L.D., with a number 19 engraved beneath it.

The implication is that Laura somehow has ties to S.H.I.E.L.D. and the number 19, and Marvel comics fans will know exactly what that means.

So is Laura Barton actually Mockingbird?

That’s a complicated question for the moment. She does share some of the comic-book character’s traits, including her marriage to Clint and, apparently, her association with being S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent 19. Muddying the waters, however, is the fact that the MCU has already introduced Mockingbird as Bobbi Morse, a main character in earlier seasons of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. That character, who has the comic character’s name and training, had nothing to do with Hawkeye at all during her time on the show. Is “Mockingbird” or “Agent 19” just a title that gets passed down, like Clint passes his “Hawkeye” mantle to Kate? Hopefully we’ll get some answers soon, but in the meantime, it leaves a lot of interesting possibilities open!
