Hurricane Henri Could Result in 69% of Connecticut Customers Losing Power, Eversource Warns

With Hurricane Henri poised to make landfall in the Northeast on Sunday, a Connecticut energy company is warning that nearly 70 percent of its customers could lose power.

According to a Saturday report from the energy company Eversource, between half to 69 percent of Connecticut customers could face power outages due to severe weather on Sunday, and restoration efforts could take up to 21 days.

Eversource is New England’s largest energy delivery company and serves more than 1.25 million people across Connecticut. In a statement from the electric company shared by Fox61’s Angelo Bavaro on Twitter, Eversource said it will declare an Emergency Response Plan (ERP) starting at 6 a.m. on Sunday.

Eversource says more than 1,000 workers ready for storm damage

Eversource officials said they have workers ready to deal with the expected damage from Hurricane Henri as it hits Massachusetts Sunday.

The hurricane is expected to hit hardest from Western Mass. to Worcester but could cause power outages all over the state, Gov. Charlie Baker said. Eversource spokesman William Hinkle said the company was ready to meet the storm.

“We currently have … workers across the Commonwealth prepared to work around the clock and prepared to serve our customers,” Hinkle said, adding the company had more than 1,100 line, tree and service crews ready to restore power.

Utility companies in Connecticut are working around the clock to prepare for Hurricane Henri’s arrival and the damage it will bring.

As of 7:22 a.m. Sunday, Eversource’s outage map shows that 708 customers in CT have already been affected.

On Saturday afternoon, Eversource’s CEO said this storm is now considered a level 2, which means 50 to 69% of customers could be without power for eight to 21 days.

Eversource says it is preparing for Henri by preparing line and tree crews to respond to any potential impact the storm has on its customers and communities.

Eversource is bringing in crews from across the country, booking 4,000 hotel rooms, staging, and military barracks to house them. Teams preemptively took down potentially problematic trees in the days leading up to Henri’s projected impact Sunday.

“The response is probably the largest response that I have ever had,” said Eversource CEO Jim Nolan on Friday. “Some of the patterns I’m seeing now I haven’t seen for several decades in this business. Very, very serious storm, so I ask customers to be prepared, be patient.”

“We will get the power on when it’s safe and we’ll deal with that matter later on,” Nolan added. “We’ve put together processes and protocols according to the requirements of that legislation and the requirements of PURA to make sure we’re tracking appropriately and reaching out to customers.”

With Hurricane Henri expected to make landfall near Connecticut’s shoreline early Sunday morning, Aug. 22, Eversource is increasing the number of possible outages the storm could cause.

The energy company will declare an Emergency Response Plan (ERP) Level 2 Sunday at 6 a.m. This means that of the roughly 1.25 million Eversource electric customers in Connecticut, between 50 percent and 69 percent could lose power, and restoration efforts could last between eight and 21 days.

Eversource has increased the number of possible power outages as the state braces for Tropical Storm Henri.

Officials said the energy company declared an Emergency Response Plan (ERP) Level 2 on Sunday.

According to Eversource, between 50% and 69% of its customers in the state could lose power and restoration efforts could last between eight and 21 days.

Since trees are the number one cause of power outages during storms and because many of the trees in Connecticut have become weakened due to insects and the saturated ground from recent storms, authorities said thousands of trees could come down in the hurricane.

“As Henri moves closer, we’ve been re-positioning crews, equipment and other resources accordingly so that we’re ready for the significant, widespread damage we can expect to see from this storm,” said Eversource President of Regional Electric Operations Craig Hallstrom in part in a statement.

Eversource urges customers to stay away from any downed wires and to report them immediately to 911.
