The Golden Era Returns: Why Black Ops 2’s Surprise PlayStation Revival is Massive for the CoD Community

The year 2025 has come and gone. The “futuristic” setting of Call of Duty: Black Ops II—with its drone swarms, optical camo, and target-finding sights—is now officially part of our past. We’ve seen Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 launch back-to-back over the last couple of years, pushing the franchise into entirely new directions.

But right now, the only thing the community is talking about is a 14-year-old game.

For the first time in two console generations, Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops II are officially returning to PlayStation hardware.

The Big Announcement

In a move that immediately became one of the most-liked Call of Duty social media posts of all time, developer Treyarch confirmed on June 17, 2026, that both Black Ops 1 and Black Ops 2 are being ported to the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 this July.

The porting process is being handled by Iron Galaxy, a studio well-known for handling massive franchise transitions. While Xbox players have had the luxury of popping their original 360 discs into modern consoles via backward compatibility for years, PlayStation gamers haven’t had native access to these legendary titles since the PS3 era.

What You Need to Know: Ports, Not Remasters

Before you expect a massive, built-from-the-ground-up visual overhaul akin to 2016’s Modern Warfare Remastered, keep expectations in check. These are straight ports, not remasters.

However, they are launching as the full, complete packages:

  • Campaign: You get the full branching storylines, the Strike Force missions, and the iconic villainy of Raul Menendez.
  • Multiplayer: The gold standard of the Pick 10 system, League Play foundations, and map design (Raid, Standoff, Hijacked) returns exactly as you remember it.
  • Zombies: Yes, everything from Tranzit to Mob of the Dead and Origins will be playable on modern PlayStation hardware.

The Server Situation: A Fresh Start

Perhaps the most exciting detail isn’t just that the games are playable, but how they are being played. These ports are reportedly running on brand new servers rather than relying on the legacy, decaying PS3 infrastructure.

If you’ve tried booting up Black Ops 2 on an older console recently, you know it can be a minefield of theater-mode mod menus, aimbots, and broken lobbies. Moving to fresh servers heavily implies a reset on progression, a clean slate for leaderboards, and crucially, a significantly safer environment from hackers.

While there currently aren’t signs of modern quality-of-life updates like a FOV slider or 120Hz modes—these legacy engine games were rigidly built around 60 FPS—just having functional, populated servers for Hijacked 24/7 is enough to bring millions of players back.

Why This Matters Right Now

With the main franchise taking a breather from the Black Ops universe this fall in favor of Modern Warfare 4, this dual-release perfectly fills the void. It levels the playing field, finally allowing PlayStation users to revisit the absolute peak of the franchise’s golden era without needing to hunt down a decade-old console.

The only question left is: When you load into your first match on Standoff this July, what’s your first Pick 10 class setup going to be?
