Is Garmin Forerunner just for running?

Of course, runners don’t just run, and you can rest assured that the Forerunner 245 also tracks an array of other sports, including cycling, swimming and pretty much everything else you can think of.

Garmin’s running watches aren’t just about running. Most will track other kinds of sports too, including cycling, pool swimming and offer a general cardio mode to cover off other activities. All the company’s fitness watches are now water resistant, too.

Put simply, the Forerunner range is huge. The more expensive the watch generally means the greater the battery life, more advanced analytics based on heart rate and the ability to store/listen to music. Here are our picks.

Is Garmin watch worth buying?

The Garmin Fenix series watch is best suited for the person who is going to take the time to really get the most out of its features. You can really go crazy with it, but for the majority of us who just need its basic functions, you’ll be better off using a cheaper solution or just going with your smartphone. If you’re looking for a smartwatch, get a REAL smartwatch that does smartwatch things.

The Garmin Fenix is a special tool for ultra athletes or those who want to get down to the nitty-gritty of things and are fully invested in the Garmin world. That’s really the only way you’ll get the value out of such a high price point.

Garmin Forerunner Review

The Garmin Forerunner 945 is built for dedicated runners and triathletes who desire advanced features in a lightweight design.

It hosts stacks of features from music storage to wireless pay to advanced health monitoring and Garmin Connect, the most robustly featured software platform out there. If you are an experienced athlete or looking to get the lightest, latest, and greatest, this is the model for you. By choosing such a design, you do sacrifice durability and the look of premium materials, but it’s well worth the weight savings when time matters most.

The Forerunner 945 received high marks across all test categories.

The low-profile design contains hundreds of feature options and is one that is unique on the market. It touts great battery life suitable for some ultra distances and has every feature you could hope for, including preloaded detailed maps, navigation, and a ton of activity profiles. This is an elite performance watch for any athlete working towards their next goal.

Garmin Forerunner Music review

Practically every running stat, great battery life, offline Spotify and comprehensive health-tracking in a small and light sports watch.
The Forerunner 245 is Garmin’s excellent performance running watch and sets a new benchmark against which the competition should be measured.

Two versions are available: one which can download music and one which cannot at a recommended retail price of £299.99 or £249.99 respectively. It came out in April 2019 to replace the popular Forerunner 235.

The Forerunner 245 resembles a round digital watch and is just 42.3mm wide, 12.2mm thick and 38.5g in weight, which by sports watch standards is tiny, comparing favourably with the likes of Samsung’s Galaxy Watch Active 2 and the Apple Watch Series 5.

It takes standard universal 20mm watch bands and comes with an excellent traditional silicone strap that fits wrists between 127mm and 204mm in circumference: in other words most wrists.

Garmin Forerunner In-Depth Review

Alongside today’s announcement of the new Forerunner 945 LTE, Garmin has also refreshed its least expensive running watch – the Forerunner 55.

This watch is aimed at folks that don’t need all the fancier features of a higher-end Forerunner 245, 745, or 945 series – but still want the core of the run tracking. Of course, as each successive series comes out, these so-called basic running watches get more and more features that ultimately make them far more feature-capable than the last iteration of the mid-range watches.

The Forerunner 55 has gained the majority of the features that came to the FR245 last time around, including running track mode (for perfect GPS lines at the track), daily suggested workouts, women’s health tracking, PacePro (this is huge), Recovery Time, now full Connect IQ support, and plenty more. Seriously, it’s almost a mini-FR245 now. Except $100 cheaper.

True, the FR245 does have a handful of performance-oriented features, but very few unique ones remain at this point.

I’ve been using the Forerunner 55 for a number of weeks now on workouts and 24×7 wear. Additionally, my wife has also used the FR55 on a number of her workouts too. So I’ve got a pretty good feel on how well the FR55 works, and where its quirks are.

Note that for this review I’m using a media loaner from Garmin. Once this review is done, I’ll get it boxed back up and sent back to them. After which I’ll likely go out and buy my own for future use.

If you found this review useful, you can use the links at the bottom, or consider becoming a DCR Supporter which makes the site ad-free, while also getting access to a mostly weekly video series behind the scenes of the DCR Cave. And of course, it makes you awesome.
