Minions are a valuable resource in League of Legends. Here is a guide to understanding them.
An Overview of Minions, The Most Undervalued Resource in League of Legends
Three Melee minions make up the front line of the wave. The middle of the wave is filled by one Siege/Cannon minion. Finally, the end of the minion wave is made up of three Caster minions. The orientation and make up of a minon wave changes once an inhibitor is destroyed. Super minions will replace the Siege/Cannon minions and will lead the wave to the enemy base. Each minion type provides different gold and experience to the player.
Minions walk along a lane until they find an enemy unit. When they find an enemy unit, they attack it.
The minions spawned in the first wave have slightly special behaviour and will ignore enemy champions until they are either provoked, the champion walks much closer to them or they have encountered the enemy minions. When encountering the enemy minion wave they also spread out their attacks on the enemy melee minions so that in every game, these three minions will die at roughly the same time and neither team’s wave gains a pushing advantage on this first wave without interference of a champion.
When a player deals damage to an enemy champion with a basic attack or most unit-targeted spells, it will cause nearby enemy minions to become aggressive towards them and retaliate for a few seconds
TYPES OF MINIONS
Melee minions provide 21 gold and 60 solo experience. However, they provide 75 shared experience with lanes with more than one person in them. For example, bottom lane has the ADC and Support. They will each receive roughly 38 experience for each melee minion. If the jungler ganks and takes some melee minions, they will all share the experience at 25 per melee minion. These stats make the melee minions the most valuable minion in the lane. Not including the cannon minion yet, because they spawn periodically until late in the game.
Caster minions provide 14 gold and 30 solo experience. However, they provide 37 shared experience. These minions can be considered the least valuable in the wave, but that does not mean you should not last hit them.
Siege/Cannon minions are not present in every wave. For the first 15 minutes of the game, they spawn every three waves. After the 15 minute mark, they spawn every two waves. Finally, after the 25th minute mark, they will spawn every wave. These minions provide 60 – 90 gold depending on the minute of the game. They also provide 93 solo experience and 116 shared experience. These minions are the most important one to last hit as they provide the most stats to you.
Super minions are the minions that spawn after an inhibitor has been destroyed. They will replace the Siege/Cannon minion and will the lead the wave to the enemy base. They are worth the exact same stats as the Siege/Cannon minions. Once the inhibitor respawns, the Super Minions will stop respawning and revert back to a normal Siege/Cannon minion.
Why are the minions in League of Legends emoting?
If you’ve noticed minions emoting in your League of Legends games, the April Fools’ Day patch holds the answer.
Patch 12.6 brought some secret changes to League of Legends alongside the announced Rengar update and balance changes. When you wipe the enemy team on Summoner’s Rift, allied minions will be dropping some disrespect by flashing emotes. This confused gamers at first but has now become a hilarious early April Fools joke.
April Fools’ Day patch has minions emoting
Minions will now use an emote from 2018 depicting a generic Demacian soldier, often referred to by the community as “Helmetbro,” playing dead when one team aces the other.
The interaction was first captured by caster Sam “Kobe” Hartman-Kenzler on a Champions Queue game. Kobe discovered that if a team manages to score an ace with every member of the enemy team on respawn timers, every allied minion on the map will emote. 12.6 arrived early to Champions Queue, part of an effort to assuage complaints that playoffs would be played on a patch that came out mere days later.
Deploying this balance patch early also meant Riot tipping its hand when it came to one of the presumably many jokes that fans can expect once April Fools’ Day arrives. There have been some legendary April Fools’ Day jokes from Riot Games in the past, including one that introduced the now-iconic character Urf The Manatee.
This appears to be the only in-game tweak made for a timely joke by the League of Legends developers so far. But fans can expect other light-hearted jests to show up in the client though perhaps not on the Rift. Usually, Riot Games will make a fake announcement of a ridiculous product or in-game item, sometimes taking to fake balance notes to trick fans.
Minions are units that comprise the main force sent by the Nexus. They spawn periodically from their Nexus and advance along a lane towards the enemy Nexus, automatically engaging any enemy unit or structure they encounter. They are controlled by artificial intelligence and only use basic attacks.
In every standard wave, there are 6 minions and in every cannon wave there is 7. For terminology purposes and to make it easier to understand, let’s say that there is only 1 block of minions (up until 20 minutes).
As a result, once all minions have been obtained on all three waves, you are awarded 375 gold, worth more than a normal kill, and the reward is almost equal to a First Blood bounty in this manner. For example, if you get kills from your lane rival while at least 13 CS lead, that lane’s lane will collapse.
