The more popular a game is, the more frequent the amount of players online can change as new players start and others end their gaming session. Special announcements by Activision, developer of the game, or tournaments by popular players can have an effect on how many people are playing Call of Duty Warzone right now.

The amount of active players you see above is the closest estimate of how many people are playing Call of Duty Warzone at this moment all over the world in real-time, this figure is as estimated using our Gohost Network Protocol technology, otherwise known as GNP.

Warzone player count and its popularity

In April 2021, Warzone has reached the 100-million player mark, which was huge. However, the count of concurrent players shows a different story. While there is no official player count by Infinity Ward, PlayerCounter gives an estimate of active players in the game. As of this writing, Warzone has 304,382 active players and it’s mostly played by players in the United States, China, and the United Kingdom.

The website shows an estimated player count for top games at any given moment and Warzone usually stays under half a million active players. While its player count is high, it falls behind its main competitors. In comparison, Apex Legends usually stay around 1.2 million players, while Fortnite Battle Royale rarely goes under 3 million concurrent players.

Warzone is far from dead, but if it wants to compete with its two main competitors, Infinity Ward will have to step up their game. The video game is coming to mobile devices as well which could be a game-changer. Let’s just hope that the mobile version comes with anti-cheat software!

WARZONE PLAYER COUNT: TOTAL AND CONCURRENT

Last we heard from Activision, Warzone had been played by over 100 million players. The official Call of Duty Twitter account revealed this information on April 20, 2021.

At the time of writing (midday UK time), PlayerCounter.com reckons there is around 250,000 players currently on Warzone, which will no doubt increase each day towards the evening. Unfortunately, as things stand, there’s no way to know just how reliable that figure is, so it’s impossible to determine a 100% accurate live Warzone player count. Consoles do not publicly reveal the concurrent player counts for their games and because Warzone is exclusively on Battle.net, we cannot view the PC player count either.

No one but Activision themselves knows exactly how many people are actively playing Warzone at any moment, but we do know that 100 million players and counting have dropped into Verdansk at one point or another.

WARZONE PLAYER COUNT: TWITCH VIEWERSHIP NUMBERS

While Warzone itself doesn’t provide us with all the data we need, the Twitch viewership numbers paint a pretty accurate picture of the Warzone player count and the game’s general trendiness.

Warzone became one of the most-watched games on Twitch almost instantaneously following its release. Warzone averaged a pretty steady 100K+ concurrent viewers a month, eventually peaking at 140K average concurrent viewers in March of 2021.

Warzone’s absolute peak on Twitch saw it garner an insane 1,613,626 concurrent viewers. Warzone hit this milestone on April 20, 2021, right before the launch of Season 3 and the Destruction of Verdansk event that reverted the map into the Cold War era.

While not quite as popular as it once was, the Warzone Twitch viewership numbers are still going strong. The month of December so far has seen Warzone average on 61,821 concurrent viewers on Twitch, making it the ninth most-watched category on the platform in the last week.

Call of Duty: Warzone Players Count by Device

Unfortunately, both Raven Software nor Activision have leaked the estimated number of players by the device. However, an independent study made by Dextero managed to make a rough estimate of the percentage of players by the device.

According to their estimated percentage, 42.1% of the users prefer to play on a PlayStation console. Meanwhile, 25.6% prefer playing on the Xbox, 28.4% on the PC, and 3.9% on mobile. So that makes almost 70% of the players have consoles as their device of choice.

This might be because cross-platform is available in the game, so there’s a control issue with people choosing to play using a PC.

Call of Duty: Warzone loses 50 million players

Call of Duty: Warzone is hemorrhaging players – losing a great number of active users over the past twelve months. It seems that 2021-2022 wasn’t a great year for Call of Duty: Warzone as the game loses 50 million players.

According to Activision’s first investor report for 2022, Call of Duty: Warzone experienced a major drop in player count. Ironically, 2021 was the year that the game achieved a total of 150 million active players due to its popularity. Apparently, this quickly changed throughout the course of the year as Warzone lost roughly 50 million players. Yikes. Thankfully, these numbers won’t affect Activision Blizzard’s sellability, as it’s already underway its acquisition by Microsoft. This would have been a big deal breaker to investors had this report been made public before Microsoft’s purchase.

As of the time of this writing, Call of Duty: Warzone currently has 100 million active players. Just seeing this figure alone, you can still consider this to be a fully loaded server. However, losing 50 million players in just a span of a year is no joking matter. It’s obvious that Activision’s shortcomings in improving Warzone played a huge role in the player count drop. Having consistent bugs and glitches in the game while dealing with a never-ending wave of cheaters, players are inevitably going to be fed up.

We’re pretty sure that Activision is aware of the situation and will have plans on improving the game. After all, Call of Duty is one of Activision’s staple franchises. Especially now that they plan on taking a break from releasing CoD titles annually, they’ll have more time to work on Warzone. If this happens, hopefully, we’ll get to witness a rise in player count in the future.
