Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Review: Is It Free to play? Why is it so big?

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a 2019 first-person shooter game developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision. Serving as the sixteenth overall installment in the Call of Duty series, as well as a reboot of the Modern Warfare sub-series, it was released on October 25, 2019, for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Is Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare free to play?

Clearly, these things are working out for Activision. Call of Duty: Warzone may be free to play, but this weekend anyone who wants to try out the multiplayer version associated with the paid version of the game—Call of Duty: Modern Warfare—can try it out this weekend.

During that time you’ll get access to 5 standard multiplayer maps and 7 of the 3 vs 3 gunfight mode, and these include the new maps Zhokov Scrapyard and Hardhat. The multiplayer playlist you’ll want to be in if you’re trying to see if you want to upgrade is probably Weekend Warfare, which mixes it up with all sorts of different maps and modes.

If you like it, go ahead and upgrade to the main version, but perhaps a word of caution there. Even though it’s been ages and Activision still hasn’t announced Call of Duty 2020, it is still definitely coming, probably in October. If you don’t want to have the old version of the game in just two months’ time, maybe wait a second. Modern Warfare will also likely get a price cut or some deep holiday sales, too.

Still, Activision clearly has this Call of Duty upgrade path down to a science. Think of it as a tiered process: players first get on board with Call of Duty: Warzone, which is 100% free. They might spend a little on the battle pass or premium currency while they’re there, but the next phase happens with a free multiplayer weekend, when players get access to the extensive multiplayer offerings with the full version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. And voila: you get hooked, and wind up a full paid player. You can even check out the campaign, which is pretty good.

Why is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare so big?

File size has always been an issue for Infinity Ward with Modern Warfare. Back in February 2020, one of the game’s producers apologized on Twitter about the size of updates, saying that the team were “constantly trying to fight back against both download size and disk footprint,” as they dropped asset packs to try and reduce the overall size.

The devs tried again in March 2021, reducing the game by 30.6GB, but that just brought it back to 175GB, and still suggested it would need more for mandatory updates.

As for why it’s so large, Infinity Ward have never said officially, but there are plenty of theories. In general, the most accepted idea is the fact that Modern Warfare has too many assets. Some players suggest that holding the cosmetics from the store along with un-compressed textures for maps are what cause these issues, while others believe that Infinity Ward simply didn’t do enough to compress the game down.

Thankfully, there are some ways to bring this number down a little. If you don’t play Modern Warfare multiplayer much, you can choose to delete the game without losing Warzone, while you can choose to uninstall specific portions of the game if you no longer play that mode.

Unfortunately, it seems unlikely that Infinity Ward will reduce the file size any further now, with the game rapidly approaching it’s second birthday. We can only hope that the developers learn some lessons from this game, and their next offering isn’t so hard-drive hungry.

Is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare a multiplayer game?

Outside of any thematic contradictions, Modern Warfare’s multiplayer is up to par, with a variety of game types for different kinds of players. Across all the modes, maps move away from the obvious three-lane structure in favor of nooks, crannies, and tons of cover; there’s generally a balance of close-quarters and long-range approaches. The standard, highly customizable toolkit for your chosen loadouts returns, with a good selection of perks to suit different game types and playstyles. Modern Warfare largely stays within the strong foundations of Call of Duty multiplayer without pushing them much, with the exception of the excellent Realism mode.

Undeniably the highlight of Modern Warfare’s multiplayer, Realism mode is somewhere between the familiar Core and Hardcore modes, bridging the gulf between them. Oddly enough, in a mode called “Realism,” you can take more damage than in Hardcore, and your health regenerates like it does in Core. But Realism removes the HUD entirely, going beyond Hardcore to strip out the kill feed on top of everything else. In order to confirm a kill, you have to listen for the sound effect that plays upon death, and you also have to listen for NPCs over the comms alerting you to available killstreaks and enemy intel. It’s a fantastic balance for those who want more of a chance to survive a scrap, rather than dying in one or two shots like in Hardcore, but with the rest of the challenge intact.

Ground War is somewhere in the middle. Maps are sprawling, with five control points to capture and one safe zone for each team on either end. Unlike in TDM 20, you can pretty easily get back to the fight after dying by respawning at any capture point your team owns, or on vehicles or your teammates (provided they’re not actively in a fight).

How to Get to Max Level in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare?

Getting to the max level in any Call of Duty game is an honorable goal and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is no different. Once you’ve achieved max level in the game, your level displayed next to your name will strike fear in your enemies and courage in your teammates. Hopefully, you’ll deliver on the battlefield as your team expects.

There have been some iterations of Call of Duty where the level progression system strayed from the familiar and into new territory but longtime fans might be happy to know that this year’s iteration marks a return to form in that the max level is 55.

  • To get to max level in Modern Warfare, you need to progress from level one to level 55.
  • It’s important to note that getting to level 55 is no easy task as it grows exponentially.
  • Getting to level two from level one will be significantly easier than getting from level 54 to 55.
  • To progress from level one to level 55, you need to play Multiplayer.
While playing Multiplayer, you need to get kills, capture and hold objectives, and complete challenges and missions.
How to Get to Max Weapon Level In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

The max level of a weapon seems to be level 69, although we haven’t reached that level with a weapon yet and don’t know if there is a level 70.
We say level 69 is the max because at level 69, an assault rifle attachment is unlocked and no other attachment is unlocked beyond level 69.

  • To get to the max weapon level on a weapon in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, you need to capture and hold objectives with a weapon and of course, you need to get kills with that weapon.
What’s wrong with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare?

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Warzone have been facing the biggest issues with many players cutting their losses by uninstalling the game due to long queue times, unexpected crashes and annoying bugs which sees players stuck on a loop between the home menu and the loading screen.

Do people still play Modern Warfare?

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare still has roughly 2,000,000 active players playing the game, which is an impressive feat for a nearly two year old CoD.

Can I play CoD MW campaign offline?

Modern Warfare doesn’t work offline anymore – Microsoft Community.

Why does it say I need to purchase Modern Warfare?

It’s important that you wait until the entire download is complete before getting the game up and running again. The issue occurs because Warzone can be opened once 20GB of the download is done, but by that point, the actual Warzone game hasn’t been updated, just the standalone Modern Warfare.
