According to NFL insider Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, Stroud is prepared to play out this upcoming season without an extension agreement in place. Yet, the Texans have gone on to bring out a competitive offer that would reach around $50 million annually. ‘Several people with knowledge of the situation believe Stroud is prepared to play out this season without a new deal, despite Houston making what it considered a competitive offer,’ Fowler wrote.
The offer has reportedly been described as ‘risky’ from the team’s standpoint, and with Stroud turning it down, negotiations are expected to resume next offseason. The Texans have stated they won’t negotiate with Stroud during the season, but they’ve already picked up his fifth-year option for 2027, meaning he’ll be under contract in Houston for at least the next two seasons regardless of how talks unfold.
On-Field Performance, Offense, and Pressure
Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud enters a pivotal fourth season after last year’s struggles have put contract extension talks on pause in Houston. Stroud followed up a sensational rookie campaign in 2023 with two down years by those standards. In 2025, he struggled behind a porous offensive line, throwing for 3,041 yards and 19 touchdowns with eight interceptions in 14 games. The Texans’ playoff loss in New England was the low point for Stroud, who threw four interceptions and looked overwhelmed at times.

While he’s had his ups and downs in the postseason, his regular-season success and three-straight divisional round appearances still make him one of the more consistent, winning quarterbacks when stacked up against the league. He’s won over 60% of his regular-season games, and has a 2.48 TD-INT ratio for his career.
