What is the plot of matrix resurrections? Who is Morpheus? Who plays Trinity in the Matrix?

The Matrix Resurrections’ meta streak sets it apart from the Jurassic Worlds of the world

Return to a world of two realities: one, everyday life; the other, what lies behind it. To find out if his reality is a construct, to truly know himself, Mr. Anderson will have to choose to follow the white rabbit once more.

The Matrix Resurrections is a reboot that doesn’t scarp the hardware. An actual reboot, in some ways.

The word “reboot” first has its origins in the “pull oneself up by one’s bootstraps.” Before it meant individualism, the phrase was supposed to reference an impossible task. Early computers, room-sized devices operated by endless punch cards, felt like an impossible task to those operating them, so starting one became “booting.” Rebooting meant that the impossible task had to start all over again, just like bringing back The Matrix in 2021.

In the hands of Lana Wachowski, The Matrix Resurrections is a movie about other movies.

On the surface, this makes sense. It’s a sequel, but Resurrections is not about The Matrix in the same way Revolutions is about Reloaded. It pays lip service to the plots of those movies, but isn’t invested in continuing their story. Rather, it mostly wants to comment on how The Matrix changed the world, and how the world changed The Matrix.

For some, this is a tedious exercise. Amelia Emberwing at IGN wrote in her dissent of the movie that “what’s meant to be self awareness becomes this kind of metaphorical Kool-Aid Man. Enjoying your scene? Let me burst through the wall and let you know that I’m not like other sequels; I’m a cool sequel.” Sonny Bunch at The Bulwark says “the meta discussion here about corporations and sequels and franchises is a desperate attempt to cover up the fact that Resurrections is precisely that, a piece of corporate business.”

The Matrix Resurrections Should Never Have Been Made

The Matrix Resurrections has turned out to be an absolute flop in theatres, and its easy to see why.

This film was a disaster from start to finish. Join me as I review it.

The Matrix Resurrections is a full-frontal attack on The Matrix

Lana Wachowski understands film aesthetics better than anyone.

With the relentlessness of a great white shark, she vigorously hunts for a new aesthetic (the way form and color and sound and design create an emotional experience) for every new project. Think of all the elements you associate with The Matrix ‘99:

The perfect green tone of the matrix
The destabilized relationship of space and time visualized with bullet time

The total lack of establishing shots and the claustrophobia of the unnamed city

  • The feeling of cool frozen in amber 1999
  • The perfect structured fight sequences designed by Yuen Woo-ping
  • The entire, perfect tone

These elements (and more) combine to make the very clear look and feel that we all recognize as “The Matrix franchise.”

The Matrix Resurrections doesn’t have any of them.

The Matrix Resurrections

The Matrix Resurrections is a 2021 American science fiction action film produced, co-written, and directed by Lana Wachowski.

It is the sequel to The Matrix Revolutions (2003) and the fourth and final installment in The Matrix film franchise. Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Lambert Wilson, and Jada Pinkett Smith reprise their roles from the previous films, and they are joined by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas.

The film is set sixty years after the events of Revolutions and follows Neo, who lives a seemingly ordinary life as a video game developer troubled with distinguishing dreams from reality. A group of rebels, with the help of a programmed version of Morpheus, free Neo from an altered Matrix and fight a new enemy that holds Trinity captive.

Following the release of Revolutions, the Wachowskis denied the possibility of another Matrix film, though rumors emerged since then about a possible fourth Matrix film and the studio constantly expressed interest in reviving the franchise, hiring Zak Penn to write a new screenplay after the Wachowskis refused every offer to create more sequels. In late 2019, a fourth Matrix film was finally announced, with Lana Wachowski returning as director without her sister and Reeves and Moss reprising their roles. Filming started in February 2020 but was halted the next month by the COVID-19 pandemic. Wachowski toyed with the possibility of shelving the project and leaving the film unfinished, but the cast insisted that she finish it. Filming resumed in August 2020, concluding three months later.

The Matrix Resurrections premiered in Toronto on December 16, 2021, and was released by Warner Bros. Pictures on December 22, 2021, both theatrically and via the HBO Max streaming service. It has grossed over $68 million, and critical response to the film was mixed; the performances were praised, though the writing, action scenes, and visuals received some criticism.

The Matrix has a complicated legacy.

It’s probably the most influential American movie since Star Wars came out in 1977 (and it is now almost exactly as old as Star Wars was when The Matrix came out), and it’s by far the most popular piece of art created by trans people.

But its sequels were divisive, and its ideas about questioning reality have influenced political reactionaries in dangerous ways. Now, with a fourth film in the series coming out on December 22, it’s time to go back … back to the Matrix, across five eras of the franchise’s history.
