Primetime Emmy Awards : Mj Rodriguez Wore a High-Slit Versace Gown to the Emmys

Billy Porter Wants Pose Costar Mj Rodriguez to Win at 2021 Emmy Awards

Twitter Went Up In Flames After Mj Rodriguez’s Primetime Emmy Awards

The actress is making history tonight as the first openly transgender performer nominated in a lead actor category.

Mj Rodgriuez has arrived. The Pose star has officially graced the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards red carpet looking absolutely flawless.

The actress, who is up for the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series Award, is wearing a pale blue-green one-shoulder ruched Atelier Versace gown with silver beading and a high slit running up her right leg.

Rodriguez matched her metallic sandals to the gown, as well, and complemented the shimmer on her dress with a dazzling choker and a set of statement rings. The Pose star wore her dark hair parted down the middle in loose waves.

Rodriguez is making history tonight as the first openly transgender performer to be nominated in a lead role in a primetime series, and is only the third transgender nominee in total (Laverne Cox was nominated in a supporting role four times for Orange is the New Black and Rain Valdez for lead actress in a short form series for Rain Valdez for Razor Tongue).

If she takes home the award tonight, she’d make history once again as the first transgender performer to win an Emmy.

Billy Porter Wants Pose Costar Mj Rodriguez to Win at 2021 Emmy Awards: ‘I’m So Proud of Her’

“That’s the thing that I want to happen — is for Mj Rodriguez, Michaela Jaé, as she is called, to take that home,” he said

Billy Porter is rooting for his former Pose costar Michaela Jaé “Mj” Rodriguez to win big at the 73rd annual Emmy Awards.

During the PEOPLE and Entertainment Weekly Red Carpet Live for Sunday’s Emmy Awards, Porter showed his support for Rodriguez. Rodriguez’s nomination is historic, making the 30-year-old the first transgender performer to receive a lead actress nod.

“That’s the thing that I want to happen — is for Mj Rodriguez, Michaela Jaé, as she is called, to take that home,” Porter, 51, said. “You know, she has carried the heart and soul of Pose, like I say, on her back like Jesus on the road to Damascus, for three seasons.”

“She’s the heart and soul. She’s the mother of all mothers. I’m so proud of her,” he continued. “I’ve known her since she was 18 years old, and to see the growth and to see the evolution has been extraordinary.”

Twitter Went Up In Flames After Mj Rodriguez’s Emmys Snub

Pose was already a groundbreaking show for its casting of trans actors in transgender roles, along with its subject matter portraying the communities of color hardest hit by the AIDS epidemic. But Season 3 went above and beyond, with some of the series’ finest hours of television, especially between actors Billy Porter and Mj Rodriguez as leads Pray Tell and Blanca Evangelista. Porter has already received an Emmy for his work, but this is the first season the Television Academy had given his co-star a nomination. It made Mj Rodriguez’s 2021 Emmys snub for yet another Emmy for The Crown all the harder to take.

Though Pose has been one of the best shows to come out of Ryan Murphy’s deal with FX, the Emmys have been slow to recognize the series. That’s partly because most of the cast, made up of transgender and gender-non-conforming actors, were all newcomers in front of the camera in the first series. But by Season 2, the ensemble had become seasoned professionals. With stunning performances by Rodriguez, Indya Moore as Angel, and Dominique Jackson as Elektra, the Emmys’ ongoing snub by not nominating any of them in the Best Actress category was notable.
With the nomination of Rodriguez, the Television Academy corrected at least part of this oversight. Her nomination was also a historic milestone — the first transgender actor to receive a Best Actress nomination at the Primetime Emmys.

The Reactions to Mj Rodriguez’s Emmy Loss Are Celebrating Her Anyway

Mj Rodriguez has received a lot of attention for her role in the FX series Pose.

For three seasons, the actor played Blanca Evangelista, a transgender woman involved in New York’s underground ballroom scene. Critics lauded her performance on the show, and she was nominated for many awards, including an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

Sadly, she didn’t take home a trophy at the 2021 Emmy Awards, but fans are celebrating her just the same.

Mj Rodriguez made history with ‘Pose’

Rodriguez made history when she secured a role in Pose, a show based on ballroom culture. It had the largest cast of transgender actors in a scripted series and followed a group of characters as they came together to compete for trophies and prizes.

Rodriguez’s Blanca was an HIV-positive woman with a house of four children: Damon (Ryan Jamaal Swain), Angel (Indya Moore), Ricky (Dyllón Burnside), and Papi (Angel Bismark Curiel). She also was an aspiring nurse. Blanca achieved her dream in the final season of Pose, which concluded in 2021 following a three-year run.

Pose was one of the most successful television shows in recent TV history. It won much praise from fans and critics alike for its characters and portrayal of ballroom culture. Fans of the show were thrilled to learn of Mj Rodriguez’s Emmy nomination. And even though she didn’t wind up winning, they’re still so proud of her.
