Joseph James Rogan is an American podcaster, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) color commentator, comedian, actor, and former television presenter.

Why is Joe Rogan so famous?

He hosts The Joe Rogan Experience, a podcast that he launched in 2009 in which he discusses topics such as current events, comedy, politics, philosophy, science, and hobbies with a variety of guests.

Rogan was born in Newark, New Jersey, and began his career in comedy in August 1988 in the Boston area. After relocating to Los Angeles in 1994, he signed an exclusive developmental deal with Disney and appeared as an actor on several television shows, including Hardball and NewsRadio. In 1997, he started working for the UFC as an interviewer and color commentator. He released his first comedy special, I’m Gonna Be Dead Someday …, in 2000 and hosted the game show Fear Factor from 2001 to 2006.

After leaving Fear Factor, Rogan focused on his stand-up career and hosted more comedy specials. He launched The Joe Rogan Experience in 2009; by 2015, it was one of the most popular podcasts in the world, regularly receiving millions of views per episode. Spotify obtained exclusive distribution rights to The Joe Rogan Experience in 2020 for US$100 million. In 2022, Rogan became the subject of controversy for hosting physicians on his podcast who provided misinformation regarding COVID-19.

Joe Rogan fans had a freak out in the early hours after noticing the media personality’s $200million (£147m) podcast had suddenly vanished from Spotify.

The Joe Rogan Experience podcast was notably missing from the streaming platform on Monday morning, sparking mass confusion.

The controversial programme did not appear in search results and a message read: ‘Couldn’t find that podcast.’

It returned a short while later after an apparent technical glitch, but regular listeners demanded answers as to why their favourite pod was mysteriously MIA.

In today’s podcast roundup, Spotify and Apple have released their year-end rankings and lists of the top podcasts of 2021, among other news from the world of audio entertainment.

RANKINGS

Spotify revealed the most popular podcasts on its platform for 2021 — with controversial talk show “The Joe Rogan Experience” taking the No. 1 slot globally. Rogan, who has been accused by critics of spreading misinformation on COVID and providing a microphone for far-right figures, signed an exclusive deal with Spotify last year. Rounding out the Top 5 on Spotify’s global podcast ranking are are Alex Cooper’s “Call Her Daddy” (also exclusive to Spotify) in second place, followed by Audiochuck’s “Crime Junkie” (#3), “TED Talks Daily” (#4), and The New York Times’ “The Daily” (#5). The audio streaming giant released the podcast rankings as part of the annual Spotify Wrapped event, highlighting the top trends on the platform and giving users their own personalized look-back on what they listened to in 2021.

Apple announced the Apple Podcasts Best of 2021 honors, naming “A Slight Change of Plans” with Maya Shankar from Pushkin Industries as Best Show of the Year and “Anything for Selena” with Maria Garcia from WBUR and Futuro Studios as Newcomer of the Year. Apple Podcasts also published new charts highlighting the most popular new shows, free channels, and individual shows and channels with subscriptions that launched this year in the U.S.:
