The Best Weapons in Final Fantasy 7 Remake and How to Upgrade Them

Equipping weapons will affect your physical and magical attack stats. Furthermore, each weapon comes with its own unique ability that can be used when the weapon is equipped. You can also set materia to a weapon which will give you access to a variety of abilities. Here we talk about the best weapons in Final Fantasy 7 Remake

The Best Weapons in Final Fantasy 7 Remake

Cloud: Hardedge

This is the best weapon for Cloud if you want to concentrate on dealing a lot of damage, as the Infinity’s End ability is one of his most powerful attacks. The drawback to this is losing magic power and defensive bonuses you might gain from other choices.

Tifa: Purple Pain

The best weapon choice for Tifa is going to come down to the role you want her to play. Purple Pain balances her stats, allowing her to deal damage and use magic equally well. The True Strike ability also boosts an enemy’s stagger percentage, so learning this skill is very handy. Alternatively, if you’re after pure damage, go with Metal Knuckles. For magic, choose Mythril Claws.

Barret: Big Bertha

With the highest attack power of all his weapons, Big Bertha is the best option for Barret. It also has good magic damage, so you won’t lose out if you want him to throw out the occasional spell. The Maximum Fury ability is a powerful ranged attack which can be super handy in many situations.

Aerith: Mythril Rod

As the main magic dealer of the party, it makes sense to equip Aerith with her most powerful magical weapon. Its high magic stat ensures she’s dishing out good healing and magic-based damage. And the Ray of Judgement ability helps stagger enemies so they can be taken down quickly.

Yuffie: 4-Point Shuriken

Yuffie only has three weapons from which to choose. The 4-Point Shuriken doesn’t have the highest attack power—that honour belongs to the Steel Reaper—but she loses a considerable chunk of health if you opt for the stronger weapon.

Sonon: Indurate Staff

You can’t control Sonon like you can the other characters, but Sonon’s weapon is still important for synergising with Yuffie. The Indurate Staff has high attack power and so can deal out considerable damage.

How to use and upgrade weapons in Final Fantasy 7 Remake

Once you find an alternative weapon to equip, you can swap between them in the Materia and Equipment tab of the pause menu.

You can see what Materia slots they have and what level your weapon is, which will unlock further upgrades down the line through extended use in combat. To upgrade your weapons, use the Upgrade Weapons tab in the pause menu.

You can pick specific upgrades from the rings to fine tune and focus your weapon’s statistics, or tap Triangle in the equipment menu to automatically upgrade the weapons without your input, picking a balanced or attack/defence focus.

How to upgrade and unlock weapon abilities in Final Fantasy 7 Remake

The main reason players should seek out all of the weapons in Final Fantasy 7 Remake is to unlock their weapon abilities, a permanent benefit that stays with the character even if they unequip the accompanying weapon.

This means that you can significantly flesh out your skills by grinding out the proficiency meter across the game’s arsenal, giving you access to a variety of interesting and useful skills that you can attune to your own personal build.

Once you pick up any given weapon, head into the Materia and Equipment tab in the pause menu, and you’ll see the weapon ability appear in the top right corner in the form of a small video which displays how the controlled character would use it.

At first, it will be locked to the weapon, but you can unlock it to be used across all weapons by repeatedly using the weapon ability in battle. This unlocks a proficiency bonus and lets you use the skill even when you don’t have the corresponding weapon equipped.

You can easily grind this out over the course of the game – just make sure to swap out your equipment as soon as you get a new weapon so you can unlock the spells quickly and go back to your preferred build.

This is especially important for characters like Aerith who need a range of spells to be effective in battle. If you’re stuck in an open-world section like the Wall Market, you could always head to Corneo’s Coliseum in Chapter 9 to grind it out in the repeatable battles.

Some of the weapons in the below tables are found past the point of no return but know that you can still grind out the weapon abilities attached in the post-game, where you can use chapter selection to jump back into the action and grind to Level 50.

Weapon abilities

Each weapon in Final Fantasy VII Remake boosts attack power and magic power when equipped, has an associated number of materia slots, as well as associated weapon ability that the character can use by equipping it. This can be learned permanently by maxing one’s proficiency with the weapon. Weapons can also be upgraded with SP to unlock several weapon passives that boost its attributes, materia slots, or provide other certain abilities.

All weapons have different materia growth. At Weapon Level 6, each weapon achieves six slots with three pairs of linked slots, but the number of upgrades required to reach this varies.

Each weapon in Final Fantasy VII Remake boosts attack power and magic power when equipped, and has an associated weapon passive that the character can use. Using a weapon ability repeatedly increases its proficiency; once this is maxed, the character learns the ability permanently, and can use it without needing to equip the weapon.

Learning a single ability unlocks the bronze trophy My First Ability. Learning 16 weapon abilities completes the Battle Intel report “Weapon Abilities”, and learning all weapon abilities unlocks the silver trophy Weapons Expert.

Passives

SP (skill points) can be allocated to a weapon to unlock its skills, boost its stats, or improve its materia slots. Once a weapon levels up, a new core is added and more skills become available. Special items called manuscripts can also be collected through sidequests and other means, which grants a character 10 SP.

Each weapon has a different number of initial materia slots, and with upgrades, the number of slots grow. At Weapon Level 6, all weapons have an equal number of slots at six slots with three pairs of linked slots, though how many upgrades are required to reach this depends on the weapon.
