The Best Platformer Games for PS4: Thomas Was Alone, Rogue Legacy, Crash Bandicoot, and More

After playing many of the great exclusives on the PS4, you will need something different to cleanse your gaming palette. Nothing beats a good old fashioned platformer. With a wide selection of games from the retro style to beautiful modern graphics, you’ll find something that catches your fancy. Engaging gameplay and fantastic worlds will you compel to press that jump button.

Thomas Was Alone

Take a deep breath and enjoy the minimalist and atmospheric Thomas Was Alone. Narrated by a smooth british voice and accompanied by peaceful electronic music, the experience of Thomas’s adventure becomes all the better. Go through each level to progress the story and to make some new friends.

Each character in Thomas Was Alone has their own unique mechanics. As depicted here, the red box, Thomas, can jump while the blue box, Clarie, can float in water.

SteamWorld Dig

In this old western themed platformer you play as Rusty, an old mining steambot. Dig into the plentiful earth, find shiny minerals to bring back to the surface and sell them for upgrades. Find the many treasures and secrets that have stayed hidden underground.

With your pickaxe, you can break most of the dirt in the underground. But be careful. The more dirt you break, the fewer platforms you have to make your way back to the surface.

Rogue Legacy

Fight and jump your way through this ever changing castle. With many different attributes you can acquire and the variety of castle layouts, every playthrough of this game feels nothing like the last. Try to collect as much gold with every run to rank up your character.

When you die, your character permanently dies. That means with every playthrough you get to choose one of a new generation of knights to take inside the castle.

Guacamelee

Explore a rich and vibrant Mexican inspired world. After Carlos Calca has kidnapped the president’s daughter, an agave farmer must wield the magical luchador mask to save her. But he doesn’t have to go at it alone, as this game supports two players.

The Luchadors encounter many bosses like mariachi skeletons and aztec inspired warriors.

Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty!

Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty! is a remake of the original entry in the Oddworld series Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee, which was first released in 1997 and received an impressive 85 Metascore.

Like the original, New ‘n’ Tasty is a side-scrolling, cinematic platformer filled with tricky puzzles to solve and an excellent dark, atmospheric art design. A sequel was released in April 2021 titled Oddworld: Soulstorm, though the game failed to impress fans and critics, exemplified by its matching 66 critic score and 6.6 user score on Metacritic.

Salt and Sanctuary

Platforming is just one of the many genres that Salt and Sanctuary incorporates, as the game also mixes in action, Metroidvania, and role-playing elements as well. This mix of gameplay styles may sound like a hot mess on paper, but the development team did a fantastic job of creating an experience that feels well-balanced and unique.

Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time

The Crash Bandicoot series‘ last few years have been a delight for fans of the franchise, with remakes for the beloved PlayStation 1 racing and platforming games being followed by a direct sequel to 1998’s Crash Bandicoot: Warped. The resurgence has given hope for those wanting to see their favorite childhood games getting a modern sequel and has been a prime example of how great remakes can be for an IP.

Super Meat Boy

From one tricky platformer to another, Super Meat Boy was first released on Xbox 360 back in 2010 and was a pioneer of the indie platforming genre, which is thriving today. The game took platforming back to its roots with a side-scrolling perspective and small, contained levels while also implementing new ideas such as the instant resets and absence of lives which has become the norm in platforming today.

Super Meat Boy finally received a sequel over ten years after its initial release titled Super Meat Boy Forever, though that game struggled to impress with many people being put off by its auto-runner movement. The sequel received a respectable 70 critic score on Metacritic but only managed to reach a 4.2 mark from users.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy

The Spyro games are totally beloved with good reason, and this excellent remaster put them back on centre stage, with a great level of detail and attention paid to all of the little things. Moving around as this little dragon is as fun as it ever was.

Whether you played the originals when you were younger or not, three games in one that all looks really snazzy and have a nice impish sense of humour represent seriously excellent value, in our books.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure

PlayStation’s iconic threaded hero returns once more in a visually-sumptuous, characterful adventure from the creator of LittleBigPlanet 3.

Go it alone or with a band of brave companions (online or offline) as you embark on a whirlwind adventure filled with dozens of unique locations, ingenious puzzles and – naturally enough – all manner of colourful outfits to collect.

Celeste

Another game from a small team, Celeste has a retro art style but its movement mechanics are modern and snappy, responsive in the extreme. It all revolves around an air-dash move that you get early on, and a slow and careful difficulty curve will have you performing stunning moves by the end of it.

That said, the end of it will mean different things for everyone, since there’s a wealth of post-game content for those who love the platforming on offer and want to truly test their skills against levels that get insanely complex.

Cuphead

One of the Platformer games originally released on Xbox One and PC in 2017, Cuphead finally made its way to Sony’s console in 2017. Cuphead was developed and published by Studio MDHR, who took inspiration from 30s cartoons for the game’s art style, which won Best Art Direction at The Game Awards 2017.
