Is Google Assistant better than Siri and Alexa? What is the Best AI Virtual Assistant?

Google Assistant vs Siri vs Alexa

which one best for you? As if managing our interpersonal relationships weren’t already challenging enough, now we have to worry about talking to artificial people as well if we want to take advantage of the best smart home devices.

The technology shown in science fiction movies is becoming reality day by day.

From thin televisions to wireless charging smartphones to artificial intelligence and many more, we can’t imagine our lives without them.

However, in recent years one type of technology has become very popular worldwide, not in the professional space but households, the voice bots.

All three tech titans have introduced their aces to sweep this estimated 15 billion USD market, Google with “Google assistant,” Amazon with “Alexa,” and Apple with “Siri,” and who knows many more in the coming future.

Moving further, let’s understand these voice bots, their origin, purpose, and how they are gathering appreciation from people.

What is Google Assistant?

Google Assistant is an Artificial intelligence–Powered Virtual Assistant developed by Google that is primarily available on mobile and smart home devices.

Unlike the company’s previous virtual assistant, Google Now, the Google Assistant can engage in two-way conversations.

Assistant initially debuted in May 2016 as part of Google’s messaging app Allo, and its voice-activated speaker Google Home. After a period of exclusivity on the Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones, it began to be deployed on other Android devices in February 2017, including third-party smartphones and Android Wear (now Wear OS), and was released as a standalone app on the iOS operating system in May 2017.

Alongside the announcement of a software development kit in April 2017, the Assistant has been further extended to support a large variety of devices, including cars and third-party smart home appliances. The functionality of the Assistant can also be enhanced by third-party developers.

What is Siri?

Siri is a virtual assistant that is part of Apple Inc.’s iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, macOS, tvOS, and audioOS operating systems.

It uses voice queries, gesture based control, focus-tracking and a natural-language user interface to answer questions, make recommendations, and perform actions by delegating requests to a set of Internet services. With continued use, it adapts to users’ individual language usages, searches and preferences, returning individualized results.

What is Amazon Alexa?

Amazon Alexa, also known simply as Alexa, is a virtual assistant technology largely based on a Polish speech synthesiser named Ivona, bought by Amazon in 2013.

It was first used in the Amazon Echo smart speaker and the Echo Dot, Echo Studio and Amazon Tap speakers developed by Amazon Lab126. It is capable of voice interaction, music playback, making to-do lists, setting alarms, streaming podcasts, playing audiobooks, and providing weather, traffic, sports, and other real-time information, such as news.

Alexa can also control several smart devices using itself as a home automation system. Users are able to extend the Alexa capabilities by installing “skills” (additional functionality developed by third-party vendors, in other settings more commonly called apps) such as weather programs and audio features. It uses automatic speech recognition, natural language processing, and other forms of weak AI to perform these tasks.

Who is smarter?

Google or Siri or Alexa. It is tough to decide a winner in the battle between Alexa vs Siri vs Google!

So to declare the winner, let’s dig out some more about their features. What do they do? And how these speech bots are continually evolving in this highly competitive and dominant market.

Alexa vs. Google Assistant vs. Siri: General knowledge

Back in the “old days,” when I had a question, my parents would tell me to look it up. (Disclaimer: My parents were both librarians, so this wasn’t unexpected.) These days, you can just ask a computer. So, we tasked each of the top digital assistants with answering a battery of 20 general-knowledge questions.

As in our previous shootout, Alexa just edged out Google Assistant, though the margin was slimmer than before. Alexa took top honors largely because it provided additional context beyond the answer to the question. It failed on only a couple of questions: It couldn’t tell me who held the all-time record for stolen bases in Major League Baseball (instead giving me the active player with the most career stolen bases), and it named the current secretary-general of the U.N. when I asked who the first person to hold that post was. However, the answers and comprehension from both Alexa and Google Assistant were generally spot on, requiring little rephrasing and rarely forcing me to ask more than once.

How Advanced Artificial Intelligence is making lives easy

As our world is becoming more digital, virtual assistants using advanced Artificial Intelligence are forming the bridge between the digital and human world. Offering consumers and businesses support with a wide range of tasks.

what exactly is a virtual assistant, and what could it do for you?

What is an artificial intelligence-powered virtual assistant?

A virtual assistant uses advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI), RPA, natural language processing, and machine learning to extract information and complex data from conversations to understand them and process them accordingly.
By combining information from the past, the algorithms are able to create data models that recognize behavioral patterns and adapt these based on any additional data. By constantly adding new data about the history, preferences, and other user information, the virtual assistant can answer complex questions, make recommendations and predictions, and even start a conversation.

How do RPA, Cognitive Automation, and virtual assistants relate?

Many organizations have integrated Robotic Process Automation (RPA) to take over repetitive and mundane tasks. RPA is an intelligent software program that is very strong at performing repetitive and rule-based tasks with highly structured data.

However, this type of rule-based robot can become overwhelmed in other situations. But, thanks to more advanced technology, new possibilities arising. If data is more unstructured or the standardized rules can’t be applied, Cognitive Automation can offer the solution. Cognitive Automation refers to the combination of RPA and data science approaches and is especially strong when it comes to textual content.

A virtual assistant takes this to the next level as it has a speech and text-based user interface. It has the ability to extract information and complex data from conversations and understand them accordingly. This offers completely new application scenarios where traditional RPA and Cognitive Automation cannot help.

How does an AI virtual assistant work?

Virtual assistants are like the highest level of Robotic Automation. A virtual assistant uses data from multiple sources and places this in context, learning from each interaction.

Using advanced language processing, the virtual assistant can process everything that is said or typed and is able to use that to formulate a correct answer. More advanced virtual assistants can process multiple tasks and complex questions using AI and machine learning.

They gain insight into one’s preferences based on previous choices and data. This way, the interaction with the virtual assistant becomes a personalized experience that meets an individual’s needs.

What does a virtual assistant do?

A Virtual Assistant can do a wide range of things. Virtual assistants used by consumers, like Alexa, Google Home, or SIRI, are able to answer general questions and give recommendations based on the user’s profile, previous behavior, and additional behavior. But also turning on the lights, making shopping lists, and turning off the heating while on holiday are options that a digital assistant offers the consumer.
Organizations often use digital assistants in customer service to handle incoming communication or internally, for example, to onboard new employees. But also, a lot of IT activities are supported by virtual assistants. They can be used to autotomize frequent tasks like system updates, knowledge management, and even transaction orders.

Siri vs. Alexa vs. Google Assistant: Which Is Smarter at Answering Questions?

We put the top three voice assistants to the test. Who will reign supreme?

The Competitors

In this test, we’ll be using the top three voice assistants on the market today—Siri on the iPhone, Alexa on the Amazon Echo, and Google Assistant using the Google Nest Mini.

Siri made its way onto the market in 2010 when it was released on Apple’s App Store. Apple acquired it a couple of months later and started integrating it into phones.

Alexa first got its start in the Echo, a smart speaker developed by Amazon. It was first released in 2014 and is now integrated into a host of Amazon devices.

Google Assistant was first introduced into Android phones in 2016 with the Google Pixel phone. Now it’s included on all new Android phones with version 6 or higher.

The Process

The method we used was to ask each voice assistant 25 simple questions and rate both the assistant’s ability to understand the question and its response.

We asked the assistants questions that include several categories; local, music, entertainment, food, and communication.

Each assistant was given a score of 1-10 for both context and response and all questions were added up to find the ultimate winner.
