Is Travel Insurance worth getting? Which Company is Best? Why go with Allianz?

What is travel insurance?

Travel insurance is a type of policy that reimburses you for certain expenses and losses you experience while traveling. You must purchase the coverage before the trip, and commonly covered perils include having to cancel your trip due to an illness or suffering a medical emergency during the trip.

Is Travel Insurance worth getting?

One thing you learn quickly when you travel: Costs can add up. And if you’re cutting corners and trying not to overspend, you might be wondering if travel insurance is worth it.

Good news: Travel insurance really is worth it, in terms of what you pay and what you could receive.
Though you may pay 5 to 10 percent of your trip cost for travel insurance, travel insurance is often worth the investment for its potential to help reimburse you for hundreds of thousands of dollars of covered travel-related expenses like emergency evacuation, medical bills, and costs related to trip cancellation and interruption.

Why do I need travel insurance?

Because sometimes…

You have to cancel a trip last-minute.

Travel insurance can reimburse you for your prepaid, non-refundable trip costs — including vacation rentals, car rentals, hotels and flights — if you have to cancel for a covered reason.

Travel delays leave you stranded.

Travel insurance can reimburse you for eligible meals, accommodation and transportation expenses during a covered delay.

You get sick or hurt when you’re far from home.

Travel insurance can reimburse you for care following a covered medical emergency while traveling. We can even arrange and pay for a medical evacuation if needed.

Fender-benders are unavoidable.

Renting a car means taking on a big financial risk; even a tiny scrape can cost you hundreds. Low-priced rental car insurance lets you drive worry-free.

You need help in a hurry.

Whether you’re planning a week-long road trip or a weekend getaway, you never know what might happen. Travel insurance gives you access to our 24-Hour Assistance hotline for expert, personalized support in a crisis.

Travel Insurance with Benefits for International Travel

International travel isn’t as simple as it appears.

International travel feels so easy now. Remember the days of travelers’ checks and staggering long-distance phone bills? Now you can use your credit card and your cell phone almost anywhere you go. You almost forget you’re in a foreign country – until you’re faced with an emergency.

Then, you may find out that your regular insurance won’t cover medical care overseas, or that you have no idea what to do when your passport is stolen. That’s why travel insurance is so important – especially a plan that covers unexpected emergencies like lost baggage, accidents, trip interruptions, and trip cancellations.

Travel insurance balances the risks of traveling overseas.

The whole reason we travel abroad is to try new things, whether that’s SCUBA diving off the Great Barrier Reef or eating pad thai in Bangkok. The more adventurous your vacation, the more likely it is that you’ll have to deal with an unexpected emergency.

But the last thing you want to do is spend your vacation worrying about the what-ifs. Look for an international travel insurance policy that includes medical coverage, trip interruption coverage, emergency medical evacuation coverage, 24/7 travel assistance services and more.

With travel insurance, you have someone on your side in an emergency.

Experienced travelers know how frustrating it can be to try to solve problems in a foreign country. If you don’t speak the language, it can be almost impossible to explain to police that your debit card was stolen, or get an airline clerk to reschedule your cancelled flight.

Does travel insurance cover Covid cancellation?

How does my travel insurance policy treat COVID-19?
Most standard travel insurance policies are not likely to provide trip cancellation/trip interruption coverage related to COVID-19. If you have a travel insurance policy for an upcoming trip, coverage for COVID-19 will likely depend on two key issues.

The first is whether COVID-19 was “foreseeable” when the policy was issued, which depends on whether it was publicly known that COVID-19 was dangerous at the time the policy was issued.

Many insurers have declared a date after which they consider COVID-19 to have become “foreseeable.” The second is whether, if COVID-19 is declared a pandemic, the policy contains a pandemic exclusion. You will also need to review your policy for any other language applicable to COVID-19.

Please note that standard travel insurance (trip cancellation/trip interruption) does not provide coverage if you choose not to travel because of COVID-19 fears or concerns. Please see “Cancel for Any Reason” (CFAR) protection? Below for more information.

Am I covered if I cancel my trip because I contracted COVID-19 before my trip?

If you contract COVID-19 and must cancel your trip, you are likely to be covered if you have a standard travel insurance policy. Trip cancellation/trip interruption policies cover the cancellation or interruption of your travel as the result of a covered event.

One of the most common covered events under trip cancellation/trip interruption policies is the illness, injury, or death of the traveler, a traveling companion, or a non-traveling family member.

What is covered trip cancellation?

Trip Cancellation is a pre-departure benefit that can reimburse 100% of a traveler’s trip cost if they need to cancel their trip for a covered reason. The most common covered reason is unforeseen illness, injury, or death of the traveler, a traveling companion, or a non-traveling family member.

How long does it take to get a refund from Allianz?

If you cancel your insurance, we can fast-track your refund in 48 hours; down from 15 business days (excludes Travel Insurance).

What is not covered by travel insurance?

Baggage delay, damage, and loss policies don’t cover everything in your bags. Common travel insurance exclusions include glasses, hearing aids, dental bridges, tickets, passports, keys, cash, and cell phones.
