Extraction 2 Movie Review 2023

The “Extraction” films, created and overseen by the Russo Brothers of Marvel fame, represent a rare category of big-budget, action-packed adventures. These films feature a protagonist, whether named John Rambo, Jason Bourne, or John Wick, who is a highly skilled killer wanting to leave that life behind, but forced back into it. The character has a tragic backstory and is played by an actor who convincingly portrays the ferocity required for the violent scenes, withstanding multiple injuries and still pushing through.

According to critic Robert Brian Taylor, the “Extraction” movies belong to “The Sad Action Hero canon,” with Chris Hemsworth being the latest addition. Hemsworth plays Tyler Rake, a name suggested by a young boy that he brings to life as a believable character. Hemsworth’s physical acting skills are on par with Schwarzenegger and Stallone in their prime, but with added range. He has portrayed different characters convincingly, including a cunning playboy, a renowned hacker, a despondent mercenary, a 19th-century whaler, a cult leader, and the mighty Thor. Hemsworth also exudes a self-assured swagger reminiscent of a young Sean Connery, but there is also a hidden melancholy underneath his tough exterior, which the “Extraction” films explore.

In the “Extraction” franchise, Tyler’s character is a former special forces soldier of the Australian Army who chose to go on another tour of duty in Afghanistan while his son was terminally ill. Unfortunately, he was away when his son passed away, and his marriage fell apart, leading him to become a mercenary. Guilt over his failures as a husband and father is a significant driving force in the franchise, much like amnesia in the “Bourne” movies and mourning in the “John Wick” series. Tyler’s journey is a redemption story set in an action-packed purgatory where shadow versions of the hero exist as defective fathers who mistreat, neglect, or exploit their children as an extension of their ego or brand. Tyler’s adversaries are dark parents who could be seen as proxies for his own self-flagellating emotions about his familial shortcomings.
