The results were decided by fans voting online, but this time those fans were able to vote on TikTok.

AMA winners

Breakout teenage singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo entered these awards as the top nominee with seven bids including Artist of the Year and New Artist of the Year.

The Weeknd followed close behind with six bids, also including Artist of the Year.

They were nominated in that coveted category against Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, BTS, and Drake.

Swift went in holding the record for the most Artist of the Year victories with six and was hoping for lucky number-seven this evening. Swift was also looking to extend her record for the most AMA prizes overall; she already had a whopping 32 trophies in her collection before tonight.

There were a few notable changes to this year’s awards to reflect the continuous evolution of the music industry. The pop/rock categories now strictly award pop.

Alternative rock has been broadened into just rock. Soul/R&B is now known as R&B. And rap/hip-hop awards are now simply hip-hop. The AMAs also added categories for Favorite Trending Song, Favorite Gospel Artist, and Favorite Latin Duo or Group.

Some of the other top nominees include Bad Bunny, Doja Cat and Giveon, who earned five nominations each, while BTS, Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift and Drake were among the other notable nominees.

The 2021 AMAs also recognized new categories this year, with awards handed out for Favorite Trending Song, Favorite Gospel Artist and Favorite Latin Duo or Group.

Ariana Grande, BTS, Drake and Taylor Swift round out the nominees for artist of the year, considered the AMA’s top award.

This year’s award show at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles added new categories including favorite trending song with nominees from TikTok on the year’s most viral tunes, favorite gospel artist (for which Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, is nominated) and favorite Latin duo or group.

AMA nominees are selected based on fan interactions with music (including streaming, album sales, song sales, radio airplay, social engagement) that are tracked by Billboard and its data partner MRC Data, according to the organization.
