Tunic Review

Tunic Review: How long is the game? How to unlock the sword?

Tunic is an action-adventure game developed by Canadian indie developer Andrew Shouldice and published by Finji. The game was released in March 2022 on Microsoft Windows and macOS, and on the Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One as a timed exclusive for consoles. It is scheduled to launch in September 2022 for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

How long does it take to beat Tunic?

Since its launch in March of 2022, Tunic has been capturing the hearts and minds of everyone willing to give it a chance. It follows an adventurous fox in a familiar-looking green tunic as he embarks on an adventure in a sprawling world full of secrets.

Depending on the player’s skill level and determination to collect everything in the game, Tunic will take between 12-20 hours to complete. Checking Steam reviews found the bulk of users’ playtime in this area at the time of review/completion and lined up our playthroughs.

Those on the higher end of the skill spectrum, or those running with the invincibility mode enabled, will be able to work their way through the game closer to that dozen-hour mark. However, Tunic is not an easy game, and those looking to fully experience the challenge of combat and puzzles will be looking more so at 17-20 hours.

With a New Game+ mode and plenty of secrets to uncover, the total playtime could very well balloon into several dozen hours before every proverbial stone has been turned over

How To Unlock The Sword In Tunic

Once inside the East Belltower, players will be greeted by a mob of small, slime-like enemies that are relatively easy to take down. Dispatch them and claim the guidebook page at the other end of the chamber before walking around the narrow stone steps and down the hallway on the right.

A ladder leads down a hole in the ground, but halfway down the ladder ends. Tunic will fall into a chamber with a fox shrine and an empty treasure chest.

Once in the East Forest, players should take out the nearby, spiky enemies before pressing on. Watch out for their ranged attacks, and take note that they can attack Tunic even through the fox’s combo strikes. Up ahead is another wooden sign that once more points toward the Hero’s Grave, but a slight detour into Guardhouse 1 to the left of the sign will reward players with a health potion, provided they can best the enemies within.

Past the wooden sign is another fox shrine, followed by a yellow dais with another guidebook page on top. Pick up the page before turning toward the nearby temple entrance. Avoid the entrance and head toward the signpost next to the column on the right side of the doorway. Again, this signpost indicates the Hero’s Grave is ahead, and players should follow this pathway around the side of the temple.

Take out the spiky enemies and head down the path until reaching a set of steps that are blocked by thick vegetation. Walk down the fallen pillar onto a side path to find two more spiky enemies. Dispatch them and follow the side path around to reach the top of the steps. Take out the Guard up ahead to reach a raised gate blocking the path forward.

What Is Tunic Gameplay?

Tunic is played nominally in an isometric view, allowing the player to maneuver their character, an anthropomorphic fox, around the game’s world, interacting with objects and fighting enemies; if necessary the player can switch to a more top-down view in combat. The game is structured similar to The Legend of Zelda, with progress limited to certain areas of the game world until the player has collected a new weapon or ability for the fox to use, adding some touches from the Souls series. The game’s purpose and method of playing are somewhat oblique; what dialog is presented to the player is generally of a strange language, though selected characters or words will be legible in the player’s language that may hint towards puzzle solutions, and some of the items that the player will find are pages that make up the game’s manual.

How to upgrade Tunic?

Before diving in, there are some things you should know in regards to powering your character up. Of course, if you’d like to figure out this aspect on your own then skip straight to the walkthrough but if you’d rather know right off the bat then keep these points in mind:
You’ll gather offering items along your travels that are located in the bottom-right corner of your inventory screen. From left to right, they enhance your attack, defense, potion, HP, SP (stamina), and MP. To use them, open your inventory while in front of a save spot then scroll over and redeem the appropriate coins and offering items to level-up these stats. Doing so makes a huge difference so we highly recommend saving your coins for this process.

In addition to offerings, you will also gather accessory cards which can be equipped to the slot that has a dotted line around it. In order to unlock more slots, equip gold coins and throw them down any well. There are 15 gold coins in total and extra slots will unlock at 3, 6, 10, and 15 total donated coins which makes for a grand total of 5 card slots.
Fun fact: you can run Tunic by holding the dodge button while you’re walking and it doesn’t even deplete stamina.
