Russell Wilson has a partial hamstring tear

Franchise quarterback Russell Wilson has tried to rehab his ailing hamstring in a push to play. Head coach Nathaniel Hackett has said Wilson is a game-time decision, but the Broncos have decided to have him rest this week and are rolling with Rypien.

According to a report from NFL Media, Wilson has a partially torn hamstring, leaving his playing status in doubt beyond missing a start in Week 7.

Wilson suffered the hamstring injury during the second half of Monday night’s 19-16 overtime loss to the Chargers. Wilson had already been suffering from a lat strain for which he had previously received an injection, but he was healthy enough to play and perform well in the first half against the Chargers.

Wilson won’t play today. Next week, the Broncos face the Jaguars in London, followed by a bye. It makes sense to give him two weeks off in order to give him four full weeks between games, with a return when the Broncos face the Titans in Tennessee.

What is a hamstring tear or strain?

A hamstring tear or strain, also called a pulled hamstring, is an injury to one of the back muscles in the back of the thigh. These injuries are common with athletes who participate in sports where they must sprint.

The hamstrings are tendons (strong bands of tissue) at the back of the thighs that attach the large thigh muscle to the bone.

The term “hamstring” also refers to the group of 3 muscles that run along the back of your thigh, from your hip to just below your knee.

The hamstring muscles are not used much while standing or walking, but they’re very active during activities that involve bending the knee, such as running, jumping and climbing.

What causes hamstring injuries?

A hamstring injury often happens during sudden, powerful movements, such as sprinting, lunging or jumping that overstretch your tendons or muscles. The injury can also happen gradually during slower movements.

Understanding hamstring tears

Hamstring tears range in severity, from Grade 1 to Grade 3:

Grade 1

A Grade 1 tear, also known as a hamstring strain, can occur when your hamstring muscles are overstretched but don’t actually tear. Hamstring strains can be painful, but the symptoms usually disappear within a few days.
Grade 2

If you suffer a partial muscle tear in your hamstring, it’s considered a Grade 2 tear. Partial tears are often more painful than strains, and your leg may feel weak or you may have a limp when you walk.
Grade 3

Grade 3 tears are the most severe and the most painful. With Grade 3 hamstring tears, the muscle rips completely or separates from your leg bone. When this injury occurs, it’s common to hear a popping sound.
