Why Was Ben Affleck Banned from Blackjack at Hard Rock Casino?

What it Means that Ben Affleck Got Booted from Blackjack?

Award-winning writer, actor and director Ben Affleck (Chasing Amy, Good Will Hunting, Argo) made waves in the press for his card-playing prowess. But oops! This was not the World Series of Poker he was besting. This was blackjack.

Granted, it sounds like he was doing fairly well for himself. But while he was beating the game itself, the bigger game stepped in his path and said, “Get lost.” Unlike playing against a table full of dudes in hoodies, Affleck was playing against “the house.” The house banks the game, the house sets the rules, but ultimately the house all too often fixes the game by playing you for a fool, only to run you off when you call the bluff.

What could Affleck have done differently?

What could Ben have done differently? Maybe something. Maybe nothing. A little concessionary cover play might have gone a long way. Especially considering that he had the whole rich celebrity thing going for him. I have gotten banned from playing blackjack in 22% of my 1,300 playing sessions. I know! I was surprised too, because honestly it felt like half. Believe me, I was no Houdini.

Ben Affleck Admits That He Is a Danger to Blackjack Tables Everywhere

it was reported that Ben Affleck—Oscar-winning filmmaker, actor, and newly minted superhero—was banned for life from playing blackjack at the Hard Rock casino in Las Vegas. At the time, TMZ suggested that the star of David Fincher’s Gone Girl adaptation was caught counting cards at a high-rollers’ table, and was asked—er, required—by casino security to stop playing. (For those who prefer to spend the majority of their casino time on enticingly themed slot machines—Kitty Glitter, anyone?—counting cards is not illegal but a carefully learned strategy that gives the player an edge over the casino.) And now, in a new interview with Details, the actor cops to card-counting and speaks candidly about the situation.

“That is a true story,” Affleck confesses when asked by Details about the card-counting report. “I took some time to learn the game and became a decent blackjack player. And once I became decent, the casinos asked me not to play blackjack. I mean, the fact that being good at the game is against the rules at the casinos should tell you something about casinos.”

The experience seems to have taught Affleck something about Vegas’s gambling system. “[T]hey don’t even want you to have a sporting chance, really,” he says. “There’s a lot of hospitality, backslapping, when they think you’re gonna come in and dump money, and if they think you might leave with some money, it’s like, ‘You know what? Why don’t you try craps or roulette?’”

Affleck says that he does not bet on anything else, really, and adopted blackjack as his primary casino hobby. “I knew with blackjack that there’s a way you can improve your odds,” he explains. “And so I started trying to learn. And then I just got to a point in my life where I’m like, ‘If I’m going to do something, I’m going to try and do it really well.’”

The actor is careful to specify that the only crime he committed at the blackjack table that night, back in May, was killing the blackjack game. “I got good,” he admits.

Affleck and His Love for Gambling

Away from the big screen, Affleck dabbles in professional poker. It is however not clear how much he has won or lost from his gambling stints. What we know is that the two-time Oscar winner has participated in various professional poker championships including the California State poker tournament, in which he came out tops and walked away with $356, 400.

He also earned a seat at the World Poker Tour finals in 2004 and then progressed onto the World Series of Poker in 2009.

Many of his friends and those who have watched him on the decks say Affleck’s a ‘smart player’ who works to minimize his losses. That being said, he has denied having a gambling addiction. In one interview, he said that he wanted to “correct the impression that there is something wrong with it (gambling) or that it is some kind of compulsive activity.”
