Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 just achieved what once seemed almost impossible for a debut title. The French turn-based RPG from Sandfall Interactive recently became only the second game in history—following in the footsteps of Baldur’s Gate 3—to sweep all five major Game of the Year awards.
Capping off an extraordinary run that started with a record-breaking nine wins at The Game Awards 2025, Expedition 33 officially completed its sweep on April 17, 2026, when it took home the Best Game award at the BAFTA Games Awards. The sweeping victory also includes top honors at the Golden Joystick Awards, the DICE Awards, and the Game Developers Choice (GDC) Awards.
In addition to Best Game, the title dominated several other categories during its run, picking up BAFTAs for Best Debut Game and Best Performer in a Leading Role (Jennifer English as Maelle). At the GDC Awards, it similarly stacked up trophies for Best Audio, Best Narrative, Best Visual Art, and Best Debut. The game’s back-to-basics turn-based combat, rich narrative, and striking visual direction have clearly resonated globally, propelling it to an impressive 8 million units sold.
However, amidst the shower of accolades, one of the game’s creators had a surprising confession.
Speaking to Game Informer at the GDC Awards, Sandfall Interactive co-founder and Chief Technical Officer Tom Guillermin revealed that he wasn’t necessarily hoping his own game would sweep the floor. In fact, he was secretly pulling for the competition.
“I was crossing fingers that we wouldn’t get [Game of the Year] because there are so many super creative games and weird games,” Guillermin admitted. He explained that while the massive blockbuster titles play an important role in pushing technology forward, he deeply values the indie and niche corners of the medium. “For me, it’s a sign of health in the industry that we can express our creativity and try something a bit unexpected, and have people react positively to that.”
Guillermin sees the duality of Expedition 33 winning both Best Debut and Game of the Year as a positive signal for the industry. Prior to launch, when the studio was pitching a new turn-based JRPG-style game, many dismissed the genre as too niche. Earning universal acclaim and massive sales proves that players are hungry for innovation and are willing to embrace genres outside of standard AAA action fare.
As it stands, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is not just a commercial success but a cultural touchstone. Even French President Emmanuel Macron publicly congratulated the studio for their achievements on the international stage. Sandfall Interactive has set a towering benchmark for what debut studios can accomplish, leaving the gaming world eager to see what they do next.
