College Football Rankings Week 10: Ohio State, Oklahoma still playoff-relevant

As we enter Week 10, let’s examine our Top 25 College Football Rankings! Which teams are at the top of the playoff conversation?

We’re well over halfway through the 2021 college football season now! Soon, bowl games and playoff storylines will be the main focus. For now, however, let’s examine our Week 10 Top 25 College Football Rankings.

How are things shaping up as the season starts to wind down?
Week 10 College Football Rankings | 1-5

Who comes in the top five in our Week 10 Top 25 College Football Rankings?

The No. 1 team should be of no surprise to anyone.

Georgia Bulldogs

Some years, the top-ranked team isn’t a consensus opinion. 2021 isn’t one of those years. Poll 10 random people, and all of them will have Georgia at the top of the college football podium. Questions remain about their offense — but their elite defense makes it so that the offense never has pressure on its back to begin with.

Oklahoma Sooners

We’re of the mindset that Oklahoma deserves more respect in the College Football Playoff discussion. And in our Week 10 Top 25 College Football Rankings, they get that respect. Yes, many of Oklahoma’s wins haven’t been convincing. But even when behind, they’ve shown that they can erase any deficit with Caleb Williams under center.

Alabama Crimson Tide

Even with a loss to Texas A&M, Alabama remains in the College Football Playoff race. And as long as they don’t sabotage themselves, they still have a good chance of making it. This week against LSU is one of those “just take care of business” games. If everything goes as planned, this should be easy for Alabama.

Ohio State Buckeyes

The Buckeyes may have one more loss than the Michigan State Spartans, but they’re still the top-rated Big Ten team in our Week 10 Top 25 College Football Rankings. C.J. Stroud has the Buckeyes’ passing offense playing at a high level.
And last week, the defense started to catch on with big games from Zach Harrison and Tyreke Smith. The Spartans deserve credit, but I’d still take OSU in a head-to-head bout right now.

Michigan State Spartans

Please, allow me to take my quick victory lap: “The Michigan State Spartans are in the playoff race!!” Okay, victory lap over. But Michigan State’s season isn’t. In fact, after the win against Michigan, it’s only beginning. If the Spartans get through Purdue and Maryland, they could potentially control their own destiny — if they can beat Ohio State. That’s a big “if.”

Week 10 College Football Rankings | 6-15

Which teams exist just outside the top five in our Week 10 Top 25 College Football Rankings?

Are there any teams that can sneak into the College Football Playoff?

Cincinnati Bearcats

Ultimately, the playoff committee listed Cincinnati outside of their final four. We’re inclined to do the same here, but there is some flexibility if Cincinnati can close out the season strong. I love the Bearcats’ defense, and the offense has started to catch on with players like Jerome Ford, Alec Pierce, and Josh Whyle making plays. If Desmond Ridder can keep them undefeated past SMU, they might have a shot.

Oregon Ducks

Oregon’s win against Ohio State would position them nicely for the College Football Playoffs — if they were undefeated otherwise. Unfortunately, Oregon is not. The loss to Stanford hurts, and on top of that, the Ducks have had other underwhelming close contests against teams like Cal and UCLA. Anthony Brown is coming off a better game, but he’s been inconsistent all year. Getting through the final four weeks unscathed may be tough.

Michigan Wolverines

Whoever lost the Michigan-Michigan State game was going to drop down the board in our Week 10 Top 25 College Football Rankings. It could have truly gone either way, but the Wolverines, unfortunately, received the loss. Still, Michigan has proven it’s a formidable team with a top-notch defense and some energy on offense. New Year’s is still very much in reach for Michigan.

Wake Forest Demon Deacons

Sam Howell vs. Sam Hartman. It’s the matchup you need, but the matchup you know you don’t deserve. Wake Forest’s offense has been ludicrous this year. They haven’t scored less than 35 points yet, and through the past three weeks, they’re averaging over 51. Wake Forest is the ACC favorite at the moment.

But can Howell play spoiler in Week 10?

Texas A&M Aggies

Texas A&M’s standing at 10th overall in our Week 10 Top 25 College Football Rankings is less about them earning this spot and more about there being absolutely no other teams who deserve to be this high. I’m not throwing shade on the Aggies; they’ve rebounded incredibly well after losing two straight earlier.

But if they want to earn this ranking for good, they’ll have to beat Auburn.

College Football Playoff rankings: Who is in the College Football Playoffs?

Currently, four teams are allowed to participate in the college football playoffs. While there is ongoing discussion regarding future CFB playoff expansion, with the possibility of it happening within.

few years, the four-team format will remain in place through 2023.

Georgia Bulldogs vs. Oregon Ducks

The Georgia Bulldogs (8-0) are the best team in college football. Entering Week 10, head coach Kirby Smart’s program is led by its defense. Through eight games this season, Georgia allows the 11th-lowest conversion rate on third downs (31.09%), second-fewest total yards per game (225.6), the second-lowest opponents’ average passer rating (95.1) and is the only defense in college football to surrender less than 100 total points (53) this year. The Bulldogs have already won the SEC East.

Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Michigan State Spartans

The Alabama Crimson Tide saw their 19-game winning streak end on Oct. 9 against Texas A&M, the only blemish on their record (7-1). In his first full season as the Alabama starting quarterback, Bryce Young is a Heisman Trophy favorite and responsible for this offense averaging 45.9 points per game. An Iron Bowl matchup against Auburn on Nov. 27 is the only remaining ranked game on Alabama’s schedule.

inglewood high school football

A week after 106-0 win, Inglewood defeats St. Bonaventure in playoffs

Football fanatics couldn’t have been more pumped for the first high school football playoff game in two years Friday night at Ventura College. The scene was straight out of a mystery novel: thick fog, temperature in the 50s, the smell of 120 pounds of tri-tip grilling and two teams warming up in identical green jerseys (St. Bonaventure wore gold helmets, Inglewood white).

Inglewood eventually switched to white jerseys by kickoff for the Southern Section Division 2 playoff opener, and the No. 12-seeded Sentinels (9-0) proceeded to show they have no intention of being distracted by last week’s controversy in which they put up 106 points. They thoroughly outplayed the No. 5-seeded Seraphs and cruised to a 26-10 victory, setting up a quarterfinal game at El Camino College next week against Huntington Beach Edison.
