Blackjack is a casino banking game.

The most widely played casino banking game in the world, it uses decks of 52 cards and descends from a global family of casino banking games known as Twenty-One.

This family of card games also includes the British game of Pontoon and the European game, Vingt-et-Un.

Blackjack players do not compete against each other. The game is a comparing card game where each player competes against the dealer.

How do you play blackjack in casino?

Blackjack is usually played on a semicircular table that can accommodate varying numbers of players. The most common tables accommodate 7 players (or seven “spots”) but we’ve seen tables that only allow 5 players and other tables that have 12 spots! The dealer stands behind the table and chip rack and the players sit on the other side.

Playing Blackjack

Blackjack games come with many rule variations and different numbers of decks. The most common game of blackjack is dealt out of a 6-deck or 8-deck “shoe” (a plastic, card-dispensing device). Single and double deck games are still alive and well but not all casinos that have blackjack will have single and double deck so the “shoe games” are a little more common. Our example will be the procedure for the most common blackjack game played with 6 decks.

Here is the basic overview of a round of blackjack:

  • Player buys chips
  • Player places a wager
  • Dealer deals cards to players
  • Player decides how to play hand
  • Dealer plays hand
  • Payouts

A casino is a facility for certain types of gambling

Casinos are often built near or combined with hotels, resorts, restaurants, retail shopping, cruise ships, and other tourist attractions. Some casinos are also known for hosting live entertainment, such as stand-up comedy, concerts, and sports.

The Blackjack Revolution

Blackjack likely originated in 18th-century France, when it was called vingt-et-un which translates to “21.” But it exploded as a popular casino game after Edward O. Thorp outlined his Basic Strategy for winning in blackjack in his 1963 bestselling book, “Beat the Dealer.” Which, by the way, is the ultimate objective of the game. Thanks in large part to Thorp, blackjack has become not just a means of entertainment but a way to quite possibly make a living as well.

What are the basic rules of blackjack?

The most popular casino game is also the one where you stand to lose the least amount of money. Yes, blackjack has a low house edge, and that edge gets lower still if you can follow these 10 basic blackjack rules of thumb.

  1. Double Down on 10 or 11, Unless the Dealer Has a 10 or Ace
  2. The Dealer is Likely to Bust with six or Lower
  3. Betting Systems Rarely Work
  4. Always Stand with Hard 17 or More, Hit with Hard 11 or Lower
  5. Stand with Soft 19 or Higher, Hit Soft 17 or Lower
  6. Don’t Take Insurance
  7. Always Split Aces and 8s, but Never 4s, 5s, or 10s
  8. For Other Pairs, Split Only if the Dealer Upcard is Lower
  9. Side Bets Are Fun, But Not Profitable
  10. Don’t Chase Your Losses

Blackjack Card Values

Blackjack at Sycuan is played with 2-8 decks. The numbered cards between 2 and 10 represent the face value of that card. A king, queen, or jack represents 10 points, while an ace card can either be valued at 1 or 11 points (the ace value is decided by the Blackjack player).

What are the Different Blackjack Basic Strategy Actions and Betting Options?

Casino blackjack players can “hit,” “stand,” “split,” “double down,” “insurance,” or “surrender.”

Hit: The player wants an additional card.
Stand: The player does not want any additional cards or make any other actions.
Split: The player splits both hole cards to create two separate hands. The dealer will then deal another card on top of each new hand. Both hands are played independently, and treated like a normal hand of blackjack. Players typically split when playing Blackjack if they are initially dealt two of the same cards such as two aces, two face cards, or two tens.
Double Down: The player increases their initial bet size to twice the original bet amount. The player can then only receive one additional card. This blackjack betting strategy is typically used when the player is confident that any additional card will help them get the winning hand.
Insurance: If the dealer’s upcard is an ace, and their second card is still unknown, the player can place an insurance bet. An insurance bet acts as an additional bet (or side-bet) that bets on if the dealer has a natural Blackjack (or 21). The player’s bet size must equal half of the original wager. If the dealer does have a natural Blackjack, the player breaks even on the hand (because the player loses the main bet but wins their insurance bet). If the dealer does not have a natural Blackjack, the player only loses their insurance bet.
Surrender: A player gives up their hand and loses half of their original bet. This blackjack strategy is done when the player believes they have a low chance of winning the round based on their first two cards and the dealer’s card.
