Summer Streets: A Celebration of New York City’s Streets

Summer Streets is an annual celebration of New York City’s most valuable public space – our streets. It is a program that offers a unique opportunity for New Yorkers to enjoy their city in a new way by opening miles of streets for people to play, walk, and bike. The program takes place on select Saturdays between 7 am and 1 pm, and it provides a space for healthy recreation and encourages New Yorkers to use more sustainable forms of transportation.

This year, the Summer Streets program is expanding to all five boroughs, with events taking place on five Saturdays throughout the summer. The first event took place on July 29 in Queens and Staten Island, and it was followed by events in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Bronx.

The Summer Streets program is organized by the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT), and it is supported by a number of sponsors and partners. Among the sponsors is Citi Bike, which offers a limited number of complimentary day passes to non-members on all five Summer Streets days. The passes can be obtained by purchasing a Day Pass in the Citi Bike app and using the code CITISUMMER to receive unlimited complimentary unlocks on Citi Bike for 24 hours.

In addition to Citi Bike, there are many other sponsors and partners who provide free activities and services along the routes. Super Coffee, for example, offers an iced ready-to-drink performance coffee with zero added sugar. The company has a tent at Summer Streets where visitors can sample the product and become a Super VIP by texting “SUPER” to 23601 to stay updated on Super offers, drops, and merch.

Other activities and services available at Summer Streets include performances by local musicians and cultural organizations, bike rental, bike skills workshops, interactive photo exhibits, and much more. There are also rest stops along the routes where visitors can take a break and enjoy free activities.

The Summer Streets program is not only a fun way to spend a Saturday morning but also an opportunity for New Yorkers to explore their city in a new way and to get some exercise. It encourages people to use more sustainable forms of transportation, such as biking and walking, and it provides a space for healthy recreation.
