PlayStation Physical Disc Discontinuation: Sony’s January 2028 Deadline
Physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028. Following this date, new games will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only. This transition has no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format.
Why Sony Decided to Stop Making Physical PlayStation Games
In response to shifting trends in consumer preference, new games will be released on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only. This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs.
Sony has broken its silence on the backlash to its decision to stop making PlayStation discs. During an Q&A session following its Q1 2026 earnings announcement, Sony CFO Lin Tao has addressed the situation, stating that Sony had been giving the decision to go digital-only some thought for a while before announcing it, and that it doesn’t plan to change its mind.
We announced that from January 2028 onwards we will no longer be manufacturing game discs, so [we announced it] one and a half years ahead, she said. There are various reasons we made this decision, the biggest being that digitalisation of contents overall has been progressing, that’s the big factor. It’s not just for PlayStation, but for all kinds of content, digitalisation is progressing. And so, when we think about the future, we put in a lot of thought and time, and we cautiously considered this, and we came to this conclusion, and we’re going to cautiously move this forward.
The Impact on Used Game Sales and Retailers
Once this transition occurs, any new games that come out, they won’t ever come into the store, said Matthew Johnson, regional manager for Rock 30 Games. They won’t walk through the doors.
That means the secondhand games market… has a hard cutoff for new games. That also means no lending or giving away games directly to other players.
Back in the day, we did that all the time. Whenever you played a single-player game, you were like, ‘Dude, you got to try this game,’ Johnson said. You brought it to school the next day in your backpack and handed it to them.
However, the ripple effects of the decision could still raise the price of gaming, even for people who don’t buy physical games, according to Brandeis University economist Ben Shiller.
Consumer Backlash: The PlayStation Digital-Only Future
The decision continues to see fierce debate online.
‘You will own nothing and be happy’ seems to be less and less like a conspiracy theory, Given Sony has taken away media purchased in digital format, including games, physical media access is what keeps them from doing that more or less.
As a long-term PlayStation customer, I’m very disappointed by this. Ending physical disc production for new PlayStation games feels like a clear signal that the next generation of consoles will either remove the disc drive entirely or make it an optional extra. That’s a major step backwards for players who have invested in physical PlayStation libraries over many years.
What are we going to do with our PS4 and PS5 game discs? The PS6 will be without me… RIP Sony.
