is Freddie Freeman canadian

Dual Citizenship and the WBC

Despite growing up playing high school baseball in Southern California, Frederick Charles Freeman is a legal, naturalized Canadian citizen. He was born in Fountain Valley, California, to Fredrick and Rosemary Freeman, both of whom were native Canadians from the province of Ontario.

Many baseball purists question if Freddie Freeman is actually Canadian when watching international tournaments, and the answer is rooted deeply in his family lineage. His father hails from Windsor, while his mother was born in Peterborough.

He claimed dual citizenship specifically to represent Team Canada on the global stage, proudly wearing the uniform in both the 2017 and 2023 World Baseball Classic tournaments to honor the memory of his late mother, who passed away from melanoma when he was just ten years old.
