International Retirement After 2026 World Cup
Brazil’s all-time leading scorer Neymar has officially confirmed his retirement from international football, bringing the curtain down on a glittering international career that spanned more than 16 years with the five-time FIFA World Cup champions. The country’s all-time leading goalscorer returned to the national team for the tournament after an absence of nearly three years, but his involvement was limited to just 37 minutes across two matches.
His final international goal came from the penalty spot deep into stoppage time against Norway, serving only as a consolation after Erling Haaland’s late brace ended Brazil’s hopes of lifting a record-extending sixth World Cup title.
My time with the national team is over. I made history, I was very happy, I gave my blood, my life, I always fought for the yellow jersey, but now I don’t want to anymore.

Return to Santos FC and Dressing Room Demands
Neymar returned to his boyhood club Santos in January 2025 after an 18-month stint in Saudi Arabia. The 34-year-old superstar is slated to return to action this weekend, just days after being spotted competing in a high-stakes poker tournament in Sao Paulo.
While confirming his international retirement, Neymar also addressed reports claiming he had criticised and intimidated younger Santos teammates following a recent league match.
I spoke after the match, demanded better, and said we could not afford to be so careless. You cannot give away a draw like that. As captain, I have every right to say that.
Despite the off-field speculation, Neymar played his part in Santos’ 4-2 victory over Universidad Central, helping the Brazilian side book a place in the Copa Sudamericana Round of 16.
Uncertainty Over Club Future
Neymar Jr has admitted he is yet to decide whether he will continue playing club football once his current contract with Santos expires at the end of the year.
I don’t know how long [I’ll keep playing], I’m not thinking about stopping, nor do I know how long I’ll carry on… I have a contract with Santos until December. I intend to see it through, to honour the Santos shirt as best I can, and then I’ll think about it when my contract ends – whether I stay at Santos, leave, move on, stop playing or carry on. I really don’t know what I’m going to do.
I’m feeling good physically, more and more so, out on the pitch. And that’s what matters. I want to always improve even if I’m at the end of my career.
