club penguin
Club Penguin was a massively multiplayer online game (MMO) launched in 2005 by New Horizon Interactive (later acquired by Disney). The game was targeted towards younger children ages 6 to 14.
The main focus of the game was a social virtual world where players created a penguin avatar that they used to explore a virtual island and interact with other penguin avatars. Players could customize their penguin by acquiring new clothes, accessories, animations and more through in-game currency and purchases.
The main attractions of the game were the numerous in-game activities like games, parties and collectible items. Players could chat and socialize with other players by speaking through their penguin avatars. There were also multiplayer games and other group activities that could be done together.
The game become extremely popular and at its peak had over 200 million registered accounts and more than 80 million monthly active users. However, declining user engagement eventually led to Disney shutting down the game in March 2017 after 12 years.
