The Story Behind Simone Biles\u2019s Three-in-One, 88-Pound Met Gala Gown<\/h3>\r\n

\u201cHow do I feel in the dress? It\u2019s definitely heavy, but I feel beautiful, strong, and empowered,\u201d Simone Biles<\/strong><\/a> said yesterday at the final fitting for her Met gala dress. Designed by Beckett Fogg and Piotrek Panszczyk of Area, the three-in-one outfit consists of a hand-embellished skirt covered in Swarovski crystals and weighing 88 pounds; a minidress underneath; and a glittering black catsuit decorated to look like a starry night sky (though each of the stars is really Athleta\u2019s logo, the chi).<\/p>\r\n

It\u2019s a striking debut for the superstar athlete, Area, and Athleta, all of whom are attending the event for the first time to celebrate the new exhibition, \u201cIn America: A Lexicon of Fashion.\u201d Biles, a brand partner of Athleta, is attending as the company\u2019s guest. Working with stylist Leslie Fremar, Athleta came to Area to create an ensemble for Biles, fresh off the Tokyo Olympics. \u201cWhen we talked to them, even though they come from such a different place from us, we talked about the same things,\u201d said Kyle Andrew, chief brand officer at Athleta.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

A number of sports stars hit the Met Gala red carpet this year. A number of tennis stars were in attendance including Naomi Osaka, US Open champion Emma Raducanu, Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova. USWNT star Megan Rapinoe and US Olympic gymnast Simone Biles were also there.<\/p>\r\n

The sports world was well represented at the event, as athletes such as event co-chair Naomi Osaka, Serena Williams, Simone Biles, Megan Rapinoe, Stephen Curry and Russell Westbrook, and at least one Seattle Seahawks superfan (looking at you, Ciara) flexed their fashion chops while adhering to the \"In America: A Lexicon of Fashion\" exhibition theme.<\/p>\r\n
