Jake Paul vs Tyron Woodley – Jake Paul defeats Tyron Woodley by split decision: Full fight results

Jake Paul beats Tyron Woodley via split decision for 4th pro boxing win

Jake Paul has his biggest win yet in his campaign to become a respectable boxer.
The YouTube star defeated former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley via split decision on Sunday to improve to 4-0 in his professional career. He now holds wins over an MMA fighter, another MMA fighter, a former NBA player and a fellow YouTube star.

It was the first bout Paul has had go to decision.

The fight was uneventful over the first three rounds, with Woodley passive and seemingly uncomfortable in his foray into a different sport. Paul clearly won those rounds, but Woodley appeared to wake up in the fourth and landed a big shot to Paul’s face.

Things could have easily tipped in Woodley‘s favor from there, as Paul appeared exhausted.

The fight had already gone longer than Paul’s other three bouts combined by the fifth round, but Woodley just didn’t do enough to make up for Paul’s early lead in points.

Woodley returned to his passive ways in the final rounds when he needed a knockout, and the win went to Paul, a conclusion the overall numbers supported.
Both fighters had issues with the scoring after the decision was announced. Paul said it was “bulls***” that one judge, Phil Rogers, had called the fight for Woodley, while Woodley was incensed that a different judge had only given him two rounds.

In the end, the three judges only agreed on the first two rounds according to the scorecards. Rogers gave Woodley a 10-9 win in the final five rounds of the bout, while Dana DePaolo gave the final four rounds to Paul.
Jake Paul appears to agree to Tyron Woodley rematch

It didn’t take long for talk of a rematch to brew, as Woodley instantly called for one in his post-fight interview with Showtime’s Ariel Helwani.

While Paul initially shrugged off Woodley’s demand, a further prod led to Paul saying he would accept if Woodley got his promised “I love Jake Paul” tattoo . Woodley instantly agreed, leading to Paul calling out for the on-site tattoo artist.

Jake Paul earns split decision win against Tyron Woodley

Jake Paul earned a split decision against Tyron Woodley during their boxing match at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse on Sunday, Aug. 29. But the YouTuber-turned-boxer wasn’t without his struggles.

Woodley, a former UFC champion in his first professional boxing match, rocked Paul in the fourth round, sending the Cleveland native into the ropes. Paul recovered well, but Woodley was clearly gaining confidence.
Woodley spent most of the fight stalking Paul and loading up on his right hand. Where Paul won the fight was with more activity, countering Woodley’s pressure with well timed combinations that allowed him to score more often. With the win, Paul moves to 4-0 in his young career. An even bigger fight likely comes next.

“He’s a tough opponent,” Paul said after the fight. “It was a tougher fight than I expected. Legs felt weird since the locker room. All respect to Tyron. He’s a hall of famer. He put up a good fight.”

Woodley has nothing to be ashamed of. The 39-year-old performed well in his first pro boxing match. Had the fight gone longer than the scheduled eight rounds, Woodley very well could have caught Paul, who was visibly the more tired fighter.

Woodley demanded a rematch to which Paul responded by saying if Woodley gets a “I Love Jake Paul” tattoo they could do it. You can’t make this stuff up.
Sunday’s event was electric in front of a near sell-out crowd at the arena. The crowd was visibly younger than your usual combat sports event, which created a raucous atmosphere.
Things got off to an amazing start thanks to Cleveland native Charles Conwell who took on Juan Carlos Rubio. Conwell walked to the ring with a huge roar from a crowd that was still filtering in just after 7 p.m. He gave them everything they could ask for.

Conwell worked Rubio’s body early and often, scoring a knockdown in the second. Rubio recovered but not for long. Conwell continued to land body shots in the third before finding a home for his uppercut. The ref eventually saw enough, stepping in for a staggered Rubio. Conwell maintains his undefeated record with a TKO. His future at 154 pounds looks very bright.

In other action, Tommy Fury, the younger half-brother of heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, was riding his own hype train into Sunday night. There was some talk of Fury being next in line for Paul. And he had the pop from the crowd to justify it.

Tyron Woodley agreed to get the “I Love Jake Paul” tattoo as long as Paul gives him a rematch, so stay tuned.

Another weekend, another Jake Paul victory. Yep, the social media video star is now 4-0 after defeating former UFC champ Tyron Woodley in a split decision Sunday night. Paul claimed he was taking a pay cut to give all the other fighters their biggest purse ever. But don’t cry for Paul. He’s laughing all the way to the bank — one estimate is he made a cool $2 million for a night’s work.

But the memes and jokes surrounding Sunday’s hotly anticipated match are free and fabulous, so let’s explore.

The tattoo

As you may have heard, the fighters made a pre-fight bet. The loser gets a tattoo proclaiming their love for the winner. After the fight, Paul told Woodley that he’ll give him a rematch if Woodley follows through on the “I love Jake Paul” tattoo. Huh? Didn’t Woodley already agree to get the tattoo, rematch or no? Anyway, they shook on it, so… round two, anyone?

Social media star Jake Paul defeated former UFC welterweights champion Tyron Woodley on Sunday night on a Showtime PPV via split decision. Paul took a few hard shots but for the most part was the aggressor in the bout. Woodley called for an immediate rematch but Paul said he “had his chance.”

Also on the card: Unified featherweight champion Amanda Serrano defeated Yamileth Mercado by unanimous decision, rising UK heavyweight star Daniel Dubois brutally knocked out Joe Cusumano and the Tommy Fury won his U.S. debut by unanimosu decision.

Jake Paul open to Fury fight

After his win over Tyron Woodley, Jake Paul began setting his sights on what could be next. An option is Tyson Fury’s half brother Tommy, who fought on the undercard last night. Both fighters got into it at the end of the night.

The social media star was unable to drop the former UFC champion but still looked impressive in going the distance

Jake Paul’s search for legitimate respect in the sport of boxing took a step forward in Sunday’s pay-per-view homecoming.

A YouTube star and social media influencer, the 24-year-old Paul improved to 4-0 as a professional in his toughest test to date by outpointing former UFC champion Tyron Woodley via split decision. The 190-pound catchweight bout, scheduled for eight rounds, headlined Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Paul’s home city.

Paul (4-0, 3 KOs) took home judges’ scores of 77-75 and 78-74 while the third judge scored it for Woodley, 77-75. CBS Sports scored it 78-74 for Paul.

“I don’t know what to say but he’s a tough opponent,” Paul said. “He has been boxing, fighting and striking for 20-something years. I have been doing this for three years.

“This was a tougher fight than I expected. My legs felt weird from the locker room. I don’t know what to say. He put up a good fight and came in shape. I have nothing but respect for him. There was a lot of shit talk but I apologize if I offended his team.”

Despite a colorful fight week filled with trash talk and the threat of scuffling, the fight was more of a showcase of the technical strengths of both despite their relatively novice combined level of boxing experience.

Paul, whose five-inch height and natural size advantages were evident from the start, survived a wild Round 4 in which he ate a big right cross and might have needed the ropes to hold him up even though referee George Nichols decided against ruling it a knockdown. The problem for Woodley, 39, who lost his final four MMA bouts to close out his UFC deal, was that he didn’t throw enough punches to make Paul pay.

While Woodley (0-1), showed decent form and responsible defense in his boxing debut, his jab was non-existent and his power punches were largely telegraphed. Despite what appeared to be a clear win for Paul, who outlanded Woodley by a margin of 71 to 52, according to ShoStats, the former UFC star made a loud case after the fight for an immediate rematch.

“I feel like I won the fight,” Woodley said. “I feel like Jake is a great opponent. I came in great shape because I knew he could take a punch. No disrespect but f— the [Tommy] Fury fight, Jake and I can run it back. Nobody is going to sell a PPV like we did. I felt like he was tough. I hit him and the ropes held him up.”

Woodley challenged Paul in the ring to accept a rematch but Paul was initially against it.

“Of course, he wants the payday,” Paul said in Woodley’s face. “You had your opportunity. You had your chance. If you get the tattoo of ‘I love Jake Paul,’ let’s run it back.”

Although Woodley accepted the terms of this proposed rematch, the negotiation appeared far from legitimate. Lucky for the event, which was well promoted by Showtime PPV and Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions, the fight never got too sloppy as both competitors showed respect for the sport with their performance.

Paul didn’t look like he was ready to challenge for world titles, but he did take a large step forward in terms of the questions critics had coming in. His gas tank was strong enough and his defense was tight. Paul also mixed in a busy jab and clean shots to the body to largely outwork Woodley.

Because of the success Paul had, he felt the scorecard that was read in Woodley’s favor from judge Phil Rodgers was far from legit.

“Let’s be honest, that’s bullshit. I mean, come on. Especially in my hometown? Where is that judge at? Come on,” Paul said. “He hit me with one real shot. I don’t know what they were looking at. It’s all good. Still got the victory. I got eight rounds under my belt.
“I’m doing things what no one has done. To go against a Hall of Famer and five-time UFC champion and win when the pressure is on?”

Despite talk of a possible future fight against Tommy Fury, the younger brother of heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, who claimed a somewhat lifeless decision win to open Sunday’s card, Paul didn’t seem all that interested and said he would need time off to consider his future.

“Honestly, we’ll see,” Paul said. “I’ve been boxing for 18 months now. I haven’t been to the dentist and I have barely gotten my haircut for like two years. My teeth are crooked and my nose is crooked. I may need to take some time off and figure out who I am. I’m only 24 years old. We will see.”

Paul’s older brother, Logan, was happy with the overall performance, which came just three months after Logan fought Floyd Mayweather in an eight-round exhibition.

“In my opinion, we got the Jake Paul people didn’t know existed,” Logan Paul said. “We saw him face adversity for the first time in his career. Tyron Woodley is an animal and the fact that my brother could secure a victory after taking a big shot, it’s huge. I have so much love for this kid.”

Elsewhere on the card, Amanda Serrano continued her winning ways by outpointing Yamileth Mercado to retain her unified women’s featherweight titles. Serrano remains one knockout shy of tying Christy Martin’s all-time record for stoppages and is one of the brightest stars in the women’s game today. Plus, Daniel Dubois made a thunderous U.S. debut with a quick stoppage of Joe Cusumano in Round 1. Dubois, 23, moved to 17-1 with 16 knockouts in his career and picked up his second win since the TKO loss to Joe Joyce.

Meanwhile, Montana Love and Ivan Baranchyk may have stolen the show on the undercard. The two battled it out over seven grueling rounds before Baranchyk’s corner was forced to throw in the towel following a knockodwn. But before he did, Baranchyk laid out plenty of his own damage on Love, snapping his opponent’s head back to end Round 6. Love maintained his undefeated mark and called for a shot against a champion at 147 pounds.

Jake Paul: Conor McGregor Needs To Sober Up, Get Back In F—— Gym; Then We Can Fight

Jake Paul is certain he already beat a tougher UFC fighter than Conor McGregor.

There is no doubt, though, that McGregor is a bigger star than Tyron Woodley, which would make Paul-McGregor an even bigger event than the spectacle that did big business both at the gate and on pay-per-view Sunday night. McGregor Tweeted the word “salivating” Sunday night in reference to the Paul-Woodley boxing match at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.

The provocative Paul, who edged Woodley by split decision in their eight-round cruiserweight contest, issued a message of his own to McGregor during his post-fight press conference early Monday morning.
“For sure,” Paul said regarding a showdown with McGregor. “You know, we’re on the path to a lot bigger fights. I’m salivating, too, because I’m just getting warmed up. You know, Conor McGregor has a lot more to focus on besides me right now. I’m five wins in a row. He’s 1-3 in the past four years. So, guy needs to get off his little vodka or whatever the f—- his brand is, and sober up and start to get back in the f—— gym, and then we can f——- fight.

“But to be honest, no way he hits harder than Woodley. He doesn’t weigh as much as Woodley. He’s shorter than Woodley. I said it before the fight – I think Woodley’s a harder fight than him. Especially on the way where he’s going. Conor’s going down. I’m going up. Woodley came in game. We’ll see.”

Woodley pushed Paul (4-0, 3 KOs) much more than any of his first three opponents – YouTube rival Ali Eson Gib, retired NBA point guard Nate Robinson and retired UFC welterweight Ben Askren. The former UFC welterweight champion buzzed Paul with a right hand during the fourth round, but Paul fought through fatigue to defeat his 39-year-old opponent on two of three scorecards.
Judges Dana DePaolo (78-74) and Jaime Garayua (77-75) scored their competitive clash for Paul. Judge Phil Rogers credited Woodley with a 77-75 victory.

Ireland’s McGregor, meanwhile, is recovering from a fractured tibia suffered during his first-round, technical-knockout loss to UFC rival Dustin Poirier last month. Poirier defeated McGregor for a second time in their third fight, the main event at UFC 264 on July 10 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
The 33-year-old McGregor, who is commonly considered the biggest star in UFC history, lost his only professional boxing match to Floyd Mayweather. The undefeated Mayweather stopped McGregor in the 10th round of their 12-round junior middleweight match in August 2017 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
