The End of Hulu as We Know It: Inside Disney’s Massive 2026 Streaming Shakeup

The streaming wars have shifted. It is no longer a battle to simply hoard the most subscribers at any cost—it is now a race for profitability, unified platforms, and daily engagement. Recently, the Walt Disney Company unveiled a massive “streaming triple play” strategy that fundamentally alters how its digital empire operates.

If you are a subscriber to Disney+, Hulu, or ESPN, here is exactly what is changing in 2026.

1. The Hulu Standalone App is Retiring

Following Disney’s complete acquisition of NBCUniversal’s remaining stake in Hulu, the standalone Hulu app will officially be retired in the U.S. in 2026. Disney is moving its user base into a “fully integrated, unified app experience” within Disney+.

The migration has already begun. Right now, Hulu subscribers can link their profiles directly to Disney+. This ecosystem update carries over your watch history, recommendations, watchlists, and in-progress titles straight into the Disney+ “Continue Watching” row. Crucially, Disney is allowing eligible 18+ profiles to be linked, ensuring Hulu’s adult-skewing library makes the jump seamlessly.

What about international users?

Until now, international Disney+ users accessed mature and general entertainment through the “Star” tile, which created a fragmented global brand. Beginning this fall, Disney is officially replacing the Star branding with Hulu across its international Disney+ apps, establishing Hulu as the company’s single, globally recognized general entertainment brand.

2. The Great ESPN Integration

Cord-cutting sports fans have been waiting years for a true flagship ESPN app, and Disney is finally delivering. A new standalone ESPN streaming service debuts with a robust $29.99/month tier. This isn’t just ESPN+; this package grants direct access to all of ESPN’s linear channels, real-time betting integrations, multiview options, live stats, and a personalized digital SportsCenter feed.

If you don’t want a standalone app, ESPN is also being deeply integrated into Disney+ for bundle subscribers. Here is how it works:

  • The Disney+ ESPN Hub: Disney+ users with an ESPN Select, ESPN Unlimited, or Bundle subscription can now stream sports directly inside Disney+.
  • Live Guide: Disney+ is launching a new “Live Guide” feature to help users navigate live content, including ABC News Live, Disney+ Playtime, and live ESPN networks (for Unlimited subscribers).
  • Exclusive Content: Even if you only have a basic bundle, Disney+ subscribers are getting exclusive access to new daily shows like SC+ and the all-women-led sports show Vibe Check.

(Note: If you have Hulu + Live TV, those specific live add-on features will remain on the Hulu app for now, though Disney plans to migrate them eventually, and they are also entering a joint venture with Fubo to combine live TV streaming offerings).

3. The End of the Subscriber Count

Perhaps the biggest business pivot of all: Disney announced it will stop reporting quarterly subscriber numbers for Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ starting this fall.

By mirroring Netflix’s recent decision to stop disclosing these numbers, Disney is sending a clear message to Wall Street and consumers alike. As CEO Bob Iger and CFO Hugh Johnston noted, raw subscriber counts are becoming “less meaningful.” The new era of streaming is defined by engagement—how much time you spend in a single, unified app—and bottom-line profitability.

By forcing Hulu and ESPN under the Disney+ roof, Disney is betting that you’ll open the app to watch the NFL, stick around for a Hulu prestige drama, and never feel the need to cancel.
