The music and internet worlds are mourning the sudden and devastating loss of Oliver Tree. The 32-year-old genre-defying singer, songwriter, and internet personality died on Sunday, June 14, 2026, in a horrific mid-air helicopter collision over Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Known for his unapologetic absurdity, signature bowl cut, and massive viral hits, Tree leaves behind a uniquely eccentric legacy that bridged the gap between meme culture and genuine musical artistry.

The Mid-Air Collision in Rio

The fatal accident occurred early Sunday morning in the Recreio dos Bandeirantes neighborhood in the western zone of Rio de Janeiro. According to local authorities and the Rio de Janeiro Military Fire Department, two helicopters collided mid-air. One of the aircraft plummeted into an electric car dealership, setting off a massive blaze that engulfed around 20 vehicles.

First responders noted the extreme difficulty of controlling the fire due to the electric vehicles’ lithium-ion batteries, which release highly toxic gases and require up to four times the normal amount of water to extinguish. A second helicopter was found approximately 100 meters away. Tragically, there were no survivors among the wreckage.

The Victims

Six people lost their lives in the crash. Alongside Tree, the passenger manifest of his helicopter included 23-year-old Argentine YouTuber Gaspar Prim (known online as “Gaspi”), Brazilian music producer Lucas Frota, and Argentine video director Lucas Vignale. The aircraft were flown by pilots Alexandre Souza and Charles Marsillac.

A Global Tour Cut Short

Oliver Tree’s death occurred at the peak of his global visibility. He was currently navigating his headlining world tour in support of his fourth, entirely self-produced studio album, Love You Madly, Hate You Badly. The South American leg of the tour had just wrapped up with a final, high-energy performance in São Paulo on June 6. He was slated to kick off the European leg in Lisbon, Portugal, on July 1.

In his final days, Tree was actively sharing videos of his time in Brazil to his social media accounts, visibly joyful and exploring a country he was experiencing for the first time.

The Legacy of an Internet-Era Maestro

Born in Santa Cruz, California, Oliver Tree spent over a decade turning internet trolling into high art. He debuted his first EP, Demons, in 2013, but skyrocketed to international fame with his 2018 EP Alien Boy. He became a titan of the TikTok era; his smash hit “Life Goes On” was featured in over 3.7 million videos on the platform, while the pitched-up dance track “Miss You” amassed over 1.5 million uses. With more than 15.4 million followers on TikTok and over 11 million monthly listeners on Spotify, his reach was staggering.

To millions of younger listeners, he was the ultimate anti-pop star—ridiculous by design, wrapped in oversized ’80s fashion, but emotionally sincere when the music demanded it. While Oliver Tree built a career on comedy and spectacle, the silence left in his wake is profoundly felt across the music landscape.
