Rory McIlroy Plummets at FedEx St. Jude Championship: Admits to Feeling Lost With Swing

FedEx St Jude Championship Results: Scottie Scheffler vs Rory McIlroy

A disappointed Rory McIlroy admitted to feeling lost as he struggled to a 66th-place finish at the FedEx St Jude Championship. McIlroy toiled in Tennessee at the opening event of the PGA Tour play-offs, shooting a final round 72 to end Sunday 25 shots behind winner Scottie Scheffler.

Rory McIlroy opened the FedEx Cup Playoffs with a difficult week at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, finishing alone in 66th at 8-over after rounds of 74-70-72-72 at TPC Southwind.

McIlroy, who finished tied 40th in his last start at The Open, had taken the last three weeks off to spend downtime with family and friends in both Ibiza and Greece. His putting coach Brad Faxon did hint that McIlroy could be a little rusty after his recent three-week break in the schedule.

Rory McIlroy Golf Swing Issues

Obviously didn’t come in here with a ton of reps, almost felt like the more the week went on, the more I felt lost with my golf swing a little bit, McIlroy said.

He said working on mechanics eventually caused him to become too focused on the swing itself rather than the shot he was trying to hit.

I sort of after the bad finish on Thursday, I felt like I was just thinking of my golf swing the last few days. I guess nice to shake the rust off a little bit, but I’m going to have to work pretty hard between now and next Thursday to feel like I have any sort of golf game to compete next week.

I’m just so far away from where I need to be to even feel like I have ‌a chance, McIlroy said. I’ve just got to keep working and hope it turns around a little bit.

The poor week dropped McIlroy only one spot to 13th in the FedEx Cup standings, comfortably putting him among the 50 players advancing to the BMW Championship.
