The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired two-time AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers for prospects Zyhir Hope, River Ryan, and Brady Smith ahead of the 2026 MLB trade deadline.

Dodgers Blockbuster: Tarik Skubal Traded for Zyhir Hope

Dodgers Acquire Tarik Skubal in Blockbuster MLB Trade

The Detroit Tigers have sent left-hander Tarik Skubal to the Los Angeles Dodgers, according to multiple reports. In exchange, Detroit will get three prospects – outfielder Zyhir Hope, right-hander River Ryan and right-hander Brady Smith.

The biggest domino falls a bit more than 42 hours prior to this year’s August 3rd deadline.

Tarik Skubal 2026 Stats and Cy Young Pedigree

Skubal was by far the best player on the trade block and the biggest potential difference-maker available. Most people are probably familiar with Skubal by now, who is arguably the best pitcher in baseball, coming off back-to-back AL Cy Young Awards in 2024 and 2025. He will be a free agent this season and is making $32 million after winning his arbitration case last winter.

Tarik Skubal is 7-5 with an ERA of 2.79 and 116 strikeouts in 16 appearances this season. A 2.79 ERA with a 31% strikeout rate over 16 starts is clearly excellent.

The wrinkle here is that on May 6 he had surgery to remove loose bodies from his left elbow, though thanks to new technology was able to return in under six weeks on June 13. In the nine games since returning, he’s thrown 53.1 innings of 2.87 ERA/3.00 FIP ball with 71 K strikeouts and eight walks for a 30.3 K/BB%. Skubal’s last start for the Tigers came on Wednesday in Detroit, when he was lifted after 6 ⅔ innings with six strikeouts and one walk, while allowing one run before the bullpen allowed both inherited runners to score.

Detroit Tigers Return: Zyhir Hope, River Ryan, and Brady Smith

Zyhir Hope is the biggest prospect in the return. A clear top 50 prospect no matter the outlet but ranked as the fourth-best outfield prospect in the Dodgers system alone, according to Pipeline. Across 94 Double-A games, Hope is slashing .293/.369/.530 with 23 home runs, 18 stolen bases, and a 130 wRC+.

Ryan and Smith are both right-handed pitchers — Ryan a 27-year-old top 100 prospect and Smith a 21-year-old ranked No. 17 in the Dodgers farm system. Ryan owns a 4.36 ERA in Triple-A this season across eight starts and 36.1 innings. Smith is still in the lower minors, but has 113 strikeouts in across 74.1 innings in Single-A and High-A.

Los Angeles Dodgers Rotation Outlook

The Dodgers are in first place in the NL West and were already the favorites to become the first team to three-peat since the New York Yankees from 1998-2000 before adding Skubal. The two-time reigning AL Cy Young winner is joining the back-to-back champs in their quest for a three-peat.

Skubal joins a star-studded rotation that currently includes World Series MVP Yoshinobu Yamamoto and 2026 All-Star Justin Wrobleski. The group will soon add two-time Cy Young winner Blake Snell and former All-Star Tyler Glasnow. Emmet Sheehan and Roki Sasaki are overqualified depth starters, to say the least. And that doesn’t even include Shohei Ohtani and his 1.79 ERA.
