Halo Infinite Review : Single-Player and Multiplayer + Gameplay

Halo Infinite is a 2021 first-person shooter game

Halo Infinite developed by 343 Industries and published by Xbox Game Studios. It is the sixth mainline entry in the Halo series, and the third in the “Reclaimer Saga” following Halo 5: Guardians (2015).

The campaign follows the human supersoldier Master Chief and his fight against the enemy Banished on the Forerunner ringworld Zeta Halo, also known as Installation 07. Unlike previous installments in the series, the multiplayer portion of the game is free-to-play.

Infinite was initially planned to be released as a launch title with the Xbox Series X/S on November 10, 2020, but was delayed in August 2020. Following an open beta release of the multiplayer component on November 15, 2021, coinciding with the franchise’s 20th anniversary, the campaign was released for Microsoft Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on December 8, 2021.

Halo Infinite received generally favorable reviews from critics, with some deeming the game a return to form for the series. Praise was directed towards its visuals, gameplay, open world design, soundtrack, and story. Criticism was directed towards the developer’s handling of post-launch support.

Halo Infinite Review

Taken as a whole, Halo Infinite is an amazing package. This series has been down in the dumps where its mainline offerings are concerned for some time now, and even in the lead-up to Halo Infinite’s launch, things were looking pretty dire until not that long ago. 343 Industries has made an excellent recovery though, for which the studio deserves all the praise in the world.

Simultaneously recapturing a legendary series’ essence and moving it forward in significant and meaningful ways is a pretty tall order, to say the very least, but Halo Infinite pulls it off with great aplomb. And now, at long last, Halo is back to its best.

Halo Infinite Single-Player Campaign Review

Halo Infinite Single-Player Campaign reviewed by Ryan McCaffrey on Xbox Series X. Also available on Xbox One and PC.

Halo has meant a lot to me over the past 20 years. From first landing on the ring in Halo 1 to the surprise Arbiter arc in Halo 2 to being heartbroken by Halo 5’s abysmal storytelling, it’s one of the few series in gaming where every new mainline entry really matters to me.

After six years, it was fair to wonder: did Halo still belong in the “Best Shooter” conversation? And would I still care about it? I am both relieved and delighted that Halo Infinite emphatically answers both questions with a resounding yes.

Turning us loose to explore a massive open ring with almost complete freedom to approach combat with a wide range of iconic guns, vehicles, and toys has absolutely brought Halo’s single-player campaign back into contention as one of the finest out there (to say nothing of the amazing multiplayer suite), and even though it drops the ball a bit with the story and lack of environmental variety, Infinite picks it back up again with style.

Halo Infinite Campaign Review

Halo Infinite transforms the series’ two-decade-old formula for the better, giving protagonist Master Chief more characterization and implementing an open world.

Halo Infinite is a great game, despite the bugs and other problems. But these problems can’t be thrown under the blanket as well, for the game’s campaign comes at the price of a full AAA game. It’s quite generous what 343 Industries have done, with the multiplayer being free-to-play.

boring 🙁 I may get a lot of flack for this and I’m saying this as a Halo fan who has played all the games since 2005, starting with CE. But FOR ME, Halo Infinite is boring; so boring in fact that I didn’t even finish the game and have no plans of finishing it anytime soon.
