Granted, it sounds like he was doing fairly well for himself. But while he was beating the game itself, the bigger game stepped in his path and said, \u201cGet lost.\u201d Unlike playing against a table full of dudes in hoodies, Affleck was playing against \u201cthe house.\u201d The house banks the game, the house sets the rules, but ultimately the house all too often fixes the game by playing you for a fool, only to run you off when you call the bluff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the time, TMZ suggested that the star of David Fincher\u2019s Gone Girl adaptation was caught counting cards at a high-rollers\u2019 table, and was asked\u2014er, required\u2014by casino security to stop playing. (For those who prefer to spend the majority of their casino time on enticingly themed slot machines\u2014Kitty Glitter, anyone?\u2014counting cards is not illegal but a carefully learned strategy that gives the player an edge over the casino.) And now, in a new interview with Details, the actor cops to card-counting and speaks candidly about the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat is a true story,\u201d Affleck confesses when asked by Details about the card-counting report. \u201cI took some time to learn the game and became a decent blackjack player. And once I became decent, the casinos asked me not to play blackjack. I mean, the fact that being good at the game is against the rules at the casinos should tell you something about casinos.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The experience seems to have taught Affleck something about Vegas\u2019s gambling system. \u201c[T]hey don’t even want you to have a sporting chance, really,\u201d he says. \u201cThere’s a lot of hospitality, backslapping, when they think you’re gonna come in and dump money, and if they think you might leave with some money, it’s like, \u2018You know what? Why don’t you try craps or roulette?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Affleck says that he does not bet on anything else, really, and adopted blackjack as his primary casino hobby. \u201cI knew with blackjack that there’s a way you can improve your odds,\u201d he explains. \u201cAnd so I started trying to learn. And then I just got to a point in my life where I’m like, \u2018If I’m going to do something, I’m going to try and do it really well.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The actor is careful to specify that the only crime he committed at the blackjack table that night, back in May, was killing the blackjack game. \u201cI got good,\u201d he admits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Affleck and His Love for Gambling<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Away from the big screen, Affleck dabbles in professional poker. It is however not clear how much he has won or lost from his gambling stints. What we know is that the two-time Oscar winner has participated in various professional poker championships including the California State poker tournament, in which he came out tops and walked away with $356, 400.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also earned a seat at the World Poker Tour finals in 2004 and then progressed onto the World Series of Poker in 2009.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Many of his friends and those who have watched him on the decks say Affleck\u2019s a \u2018smart player\u2019 who works to minimize his losses. That being said, he has denied having a gambling addiction.
